Help please - GDI or non-GDI V6 3500?
Hi guys,

well, my engine is fried. Has already been rebuilt, so cylinders are already at max bore. (1997 Pajero 3500 V6 still Non-GDI)

Good news: That puts me in the position to become creative - I got two offers for replacement 2nd hand engines, same price for the NON-GDI version as well as the GDI version. Now, the GDI would need a piggyback computer for an additional 4500R or so.

What would you recommend - stay with the "old" natural breather or invest a bit to get the improved GDI ?

Thanks for your replies!!!
Cheers,
Jonas

Hi J.

In my opinion I would stick with the tried and tested standard 3.5 v6, it is a very good bulletproof reliable motor.

The GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) is VERY finiky when it comes to fuel as the injector tolerances are alot smaller, much akin to a diesel motor. The fuel pressures involved are much higher, so any suspect fuel is likely to cause hassles down the road - water, dirt etc, where the standard 3.5 motor just takes it all in its stride.

If you do go down the GDI route, I would strongly advise a very good quality low micron fuel filter and water trap.

Either way, let us know how the build goes!!

Hi Nick,

thanks for the quick reply - hm doesn't sound so good then after all - especially for some lacking fuel environments in the neighbouring countries. I guess especially with Petrol you sometimes have to take what you can get, and better have an engine that comes from those days where that was normal everywhere... :-)

I found a guy in JHB who sells 2nd hand engines 50-80kkms on them with 3months/5000kms warranty for 16500R... now he just needs to dig up one non-GDI for me... Will update once I got that beast in.

Anybody needs engine spare parts? :-)

Cheers,
Jonas

Hi Jonas

Have a read here to put you mind at rest regading the GDI, more problems and hassles than the standard 3.5 IMHO

Also I am not sure if your fuel pump in the petrol tank can deliver the pressure for the GDI motor to run on, maybe there is a booster pump on the motor it self??

Wow, that is a devastating article and that means I will keep my hands off that GDI stuff... More problems with questionable improvements...

Okay, story ended (for now):
GDI conversion would cost 16,000 and that makes it very uneconomical, apart from the above stories...

so, I found a used replacement engine from Engine Den, they were the only ones country wide having one on stock. Old one out, new one in, done.

Time to then do some mods... some guards and a bit lift.
