Our 1997 3.5 GLS Gen 2 Soldier
You know what people say "they don't make it , like they used to" Well I'm a very proud owner of this 1997 "Old-timer' with 245 000km on the Clock. It is a great tragedy that this model has not continued like the 76 Land Cruiser.I have only bought the vehicle a year ago from it's second owner. With 245 000km on the clock I should propbably expect that everything would no longer work perfectly, although I have not have any real issues at the moment with it and it give me great pleasure. As I am a very careful owner I want to maintain it mecanically .What do parts do you suggest I should change now to nurse the engine so to avoid acostly mechanical breakdown (i.e water pump, etc.)
I would also really want to know how the Gen 2 is rated againste the Gen 3 Petrol engine.Love this siite and looking forward to hear from you! Jacques :D

Jacques39,

Firstly: Welcome to the Pajero family
Secondly: Nobody on this forum is surprised to hear that you enjoy your Pajero and that it is reliable :D

The Pajero Sport can (to a certain extent) be considered a carry-on from the Gen2 Pajero. Sure it is bolted on to a Triton chassis, but it carries the Gen2 rear suspension and axle, which is mated to the real Pajero 4x4 system and matched to an early Pajero 4-speed autobox.

Your twin-cam motor is a real beaut, but does have a reputation for ticking valve lifters ("tappets"). The next generation V6 was the 3.5 fitted in the Gen3. They changed the valve-gear completely and ended up with a single cam per bank, but retained the 4 valves per cylinder. They claimed a torque curve better suited to a 4x4 vehicle - but I think they just tried to save money ;) .

In 2004 the 3.8V6 appeared in the Pajero and in 2007 they upped the game again and produced the 3.8MIVIC - which is a great motor. It is quiet and smooth and the max torque comes out at 2750rpm. The Kw rating is 186 - the first time they produced an engine with more horses than your engine.

Enjoy,
Roelf

Thanks Roelf,
This explains well and is to the Point.Fact is I am an old believer of the Petrol engine (Despite l/100KM).Regarding the 'tappets' should I be concerned? They only make a noise after I start the engine , otherwise the engine is quiet.I have heard 'techies' that told me that a Loose Lifter is a Happy lifter, and that it should not be a real concern.

Take care!

Re: Our 1997 3.5 GLS Gen 2 Soldier
The general "tappet" consensus is to run the motor on Caltex DELO 15W40 Multi grade oil and fill the sump some 5mm above to full mark.

Thanks Roelf,
I have already switched to Shell 20W50 (High mileage oil)on the Pajero's previous service. It might be that Caltex be the better alternative? .Will take that in consideration on its next service.

Take care!
