New Pajero owner here. Getting ready to drive from RSA to TZ
Hi there,

My name is Joris and I just bought a 1998 Pajero 3500 V6 LWB and I want to take her for a spin in the next few months. me and my girlfriend left Holland 2 weeks ago to go on this trip and we will leave cape town on the 11th of February and then we have the next 6 months to get to mount Kilimanjaro and back again.

This should be the adventure of a lifetime but as this is my first Pajero(and 4X4) I can use all the help I can get.

I would love some help with the following:

What gear should I buy?
What spares should I bring?
what will most likely be the first thing to go bust or what are the most common issues with this car and how can I fix them?
Are there Mitsubishi mechanics or dealer in any of the following countries and how can I get a hold of them if I need help?

Mozambique
Zimbabwe
Malawi
Tanzania
Botswana
Zambia
Namibia

any other tips(where to stay, what (not) to do) are welcome

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Joris

I also have a 1998 3.5 V6 LWB with 237000km on the clock. I love the car as it comfortable and very capable. I'm sure you will love yours too. I have not had any major problems with my carn mostly just normal servicing. However, recently I had a problem with the engine running too hot due to a shot thermostat and a loose cam belt with caused the water pump to not work efficiently. So, before you set off I would ensure that your cooling system works 100%, including radiator, radiator cap (quite often ignored), water pump etc. I would also change all the hoses and belts. An external temperature gauge may help prevent a disaster on your trip.

I would also ensure that your super select system works and there are no flashing lights. I'm sure more mechanically knowledgeable people will provide more useful information.

My family and I have three pajeros and a colt bakkie and have the following equipment for our trips:

recovery points and high lift jacking points
A recovery kit including shackles and snatch rope and tow rope
Air compressor
Dual battery system
Waeco fridge/freezer
Roof rack for extra fuel in jerry cans (the V6 is pretty thirsty)
Tool kit and tire repair kit
Bash plate
BFG tyres (I like the BFG's put any all terrain tyre should do the trick)
Seed net for your radiator.

For spares I would take hoses, belts, fuses, radiator cap

Hope this helps a bit. Sounds like an awesome trip. Hope it all goes well

Thanks Keenan!

great tips. the car is in tip top condition and is already fitted with an extra temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and volt meter(the previous owner put them where the temp and altimeter gauges where.. and it looks great!).

The car is also already fitted with:
- high lift points.
- a roof rack with tent, awning and place for two jerrycans and two gas bottles.
- two kc spotlights
- bashplate
- iron man suspension
- new BFG Mud Terrain KM2 tires plus 1 spare and we are going to buy an extra spare just in case.

and we have a 97 items long list for all other stuff we need like a stove, solar shower, steel putty etc etc.. I added the seed net! (if any one is interested I have to translate it because it is in dutch..)

so I think we are well on our way and this forum contains some great extra information and more is definitely better in this case!

Excellent, sounds like the car is well kitted out.

What is the brand of your additional temperature gauge? I'm trying to find one that will fit in the same place as yours.

Wow pctheron, Thanks for the tips! also apologies for the late replay but we've been out camping for the last week. I've downloaded your travel pdf for later perusal and I've added stansfield motors to my list.

I also now have to spare air filters, one spare fuel filter, one spare oil filter and an extra set of engine belts. I think the only thing that we are missing right now is an extra spare tire.. if anyone reading this knows a where I can pick up a (cheap) spare tire in the Oudtshoorn area, do let me know.

Regards,

Joris

while I still have fast wifi also an update on the new gauges in the center console. they are made by Iequus: http://www.iequus.com/

the gauges that are fitted are from the 8000 series: http://www.iequus.com/Product/Gauges/s8000.html

I took a picture of how they look in the car but I can't find the option to add a picture..
