Possible turbo failure
Hi guys

I need some info please. I have a Gen.4 3.2diesel Pajero. I have been putting in diesel 50ppm, but have heard that the 50ppm does not have sufficient lubrication for the turbo.
From what I have heard, 500ppm will clog up the injectors but lubricates the turbo better.
So now the 64 Million dollar question??

Are any of the above true ?? if so, will it be cheaper to replace the turbo or the injectors??

Any advise and help will be greatly appreciated.
Re: Possible turbo failure
Both statements sound a bit dodgy to me. I put in 500 ppm and 50ppm, depending on how I feel. Also I had my car since before there even was a choice between 50 and 500, so it must have run a long time on 500 alone.

The turbo gets turned by exhaust gasses and by then there is not any lubrication left in the diesel as it has burned already. Turbo gets lubricated by engine oil.

Injectors does not get clogged by 50 or 500ppm but rather with contaminants in the diesel. Also if diesel is mixed with say paraffin it will damage the tips of the injectors due to higher temperatures burned I think.

500ppm will however breakdown your oil lubricity quicker than 50ppm due to the higher sulphur content. Thus the reduced oil lubricity can lead to turbo failure if not changed regularly enough.

Moral of the story. Try and put clean 50ppm in as often as possible, but don't stress if you fill with 500, as long as it is uncontaminated it should be fine as long as you stick to the recommended oil service intervals.

I like to check injectors every 100000km or so in any case.

Hi Ditto on the diesel Put in what’s available. The Beast is on 340 000 with no turbo problems. Some members recommend the occasional addition of Two Stroke to the fuel, (Every 10 000 km) but personally I’m not convinced.

Re: Possible turbo failure
The turbo
  1. Is driven by a stream of exhaust gasses. What you burn (within reason) will not influence the turbo.
  2. The turbo shaft is lubricated by circulating sump oil. The only influence the diesel sulphur content has on this is the deterioration of the oil due to surphur content in the oil. The higher the sulphur content, the sooner the oil will need to be replaced. I doubt whether the turbo will be the first to fail due to 500ppm diesel.
Adding 2-stroke oil to the diesel?
I'm a believer.
It won't do anything to increase the life of the sump oil, but it will reduce carbon build-up in the combustion chamber and outlet tract.

Thanks CATS and you other guys for the vauable info. I recon its quite plain enough, so I'll be putting in the 50 ppm from now on.
