My 3.2DiD sadly left me alongside the road today.
Last week I realised that when accelerating, there is a slight hesitation in the power delivery (but only sometimes). I thought of putting it on the computer on Monday, but sadly this afternoon, on my way back from Pretoria (towing a caravan), it died on me. I had a sudden loss of power and stopped.
It idles as if on 3 cylinders
The engines shudders quite a bit as a results of that
The exhaust has a whitish smoke reaking of uncombusted diesel.
All temperatures and water and oil levels are fine.
In my opinion it seems like a faulty injector or injection pump, or maybe a stuck valve. Could be a head gasket? (no water in oil though)
Are there anybody that had a similar experience, or could help with a diagnosis.
I am going to fetch the car tomorrow with a trailer and take it to a friend whom I trust with fixing it, but I would like to know what it could possibly be.

Possibly hole in piston.
I have seen one and it was also running like your description. Cause is probably an injector with incorrect spray pattern which caused hotspot.
Sorry to hear and please keep us updated.
Here is a link to such a case.

Update is that it is exactly as you said. Hole in the piston, as well as two other piston also slightly damaged.
I must say that the rest of the engine is in very good shape, almost no ridge on the sleeves. I am going to rebuild the whole engine.
NOTE TO ALL DIESEL OWNERS: DO THE INJECTORS
I will keep you up to date as to the cost of the repair.

Eish Willie. As much as I like to be right I feel for you at this time.
Please keep us updated on your progress and final costs.
If you do repair please do yourself a favour and do all 4 cylinders. I know of two people that just replaced that one cylinder and within 2000km later had the exact same problem on another one.
Also check your diesel left in the tank for bad mix like parafin as I heard that this can also lead to similar type of failure even if the injectors are still in spec.

What's the mileage on your vehicle?
When you say "do the injectors" - do you mean test our replace them?
Hi guys,
I had the same problem (white smoke and running on a few cylinders) the first time I took my 2001 DiD out on the dunes just after buying her in 2009. I had just descended a steep dune but the engine cut halfway down. I free-wheeled to the bottom and when I tried to start, I got the white smoke and choking engine when trying to rev it a bit (idling was OK).
I switched off and let the vehicle stand for about 15min and after that she was fine - has been ever since. That was about 55,000km ago.
The service manager at the agents couldn't figure out what caused the problem. Any ideas guys???

Think it can be related to my problem?

Main problem: From time to time white smoke... Does not rev above 2000 - goes into limp mode. White smoke less after removing dieselpump, redo timing, and fitted new injector tips. BUT still little bit white smoke and no revving above 2000rpm - no power...

My car has done 276000km, when I say do the injectors, I mean take it to the diesel guys to test, and fit new tips if required.
I am doing a complete rebuild of the engine. Will keep you up to date as to the costs.
White smoke = fuel starvation = pump or injectors
Mine had a darker smoke, and I could smell uncombusted diesel.

Ok
I got my Pajero back last week. Done the complete engine, cylinder head, waterpump, oilpump, diesel pump and injectors. Looks like a new one now. Cost +-R51000.
I have driven it 76km and very happy with the performance. Two slight issues that I will follow up today. When driving at almost idle, it seems as if the fuel supply cuts off too early, giving a jerky ride. ...and the turbo sounds as if there is a dry bearing noise.
Regards
