Im suggesting disconnecting the existing wiring and connect to a new gauge just to check that its your OE gauge thats faulty.

Im not familiar with the Pajero but I imagine there is a temp sensor somewhere in the block.

Thanks Dirty Boy, i Guess i will have to contact some Auto Electrician if i have to do that test.
If it has moving parts, You can always figure out how it works. Not applicable for solid state hard drives.

I experienced exactly the same symptoms with the 'overheating' indication interrupting a couple of long trips.
In discussion with the Mitsubishi Dealership in Cape Town, as well as this forum, it always came back to the same answer....THE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT CONTROLS THE FUEL AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEEDS REPLACING!!!
I finally capitulated, spent R2000 and had the CIRCUIT BOARD replaced!!
As mentioned in previous postings, the MILEAGE HAS BEEN RESET.... and after having an 11 year old SWB with 266000kms on the clock, I now have a 2002 3.2 DID GLS SWB with ONLY 350KMS ON THE CLOCK..
... Good condition, too! Think I will get a good price for it???
The good news is that the Temperature Gauge indicates a nice, cool, steady reading.
Now all I need is to find one of those AUTO ELECTRICIANS WHO WILL MANIPULATE MY MILEAGE......LEGALLY, OF COURSE!!

I wonder howmany pajeros where sold with low mileage based on this loophole for the mileage?
Surely the dealer should sell the part exclusively if they get the old one back and transfer the mileage?

I agree fully, 4ePikanini, but they just say they don't have the equipment to do it!!
It should just become part of the replacement process.
Mitsubishi are the ones who are aware of the circuit board change, and, as such, they should ensure that the vehicle leaving their premises is bearing credentials as honestly as when it came in.
But, this IS the Motor Trade, you know....

Hi curly, i guess i gonna be heading the circuit board route too. the challenge after my Pajero "becomes New" is i don't know if i will be able to find an Auto electrician around here (Gaborone) that can competently (and honestly) deal with the mileage issue. At the end of the day if and when i decide to sell, i would not want to be stuck wilh a battered car with a 1000Ks on the dial!

Both our 2001 3.2DiD Pj's got new cluster boards in due to the same revcounter type heat gauge symptom
Mine just topped 24000km now on the clock and the other 45000km after the swop.

Looks like Mits know about this problem and they are conveniently keeping quite about it. 
If so many PJ owners have to have the clusters replaced, is this the reason why these cars never seem to grow old? (mileage wise)
