Gen 3 Diesel pump no power
Hi all,
My brother has a 2005 Pajero 3.2 DID with apparent diesel pump problems. It stil runs but no power. Alan Black want R37k to fix the pump and the Steelers have no clue.
Any suggestion as to who to see about this?
Thanks
Re: Gen 3 Diesel pump no power
I think you need to go see the bank manager as those diesel pumps are expensive to repair and there are not a lot of options.

I wonder why it went bad so quickly? Mine is a 2001 model and still good at 290000km. What is the mileage on that 2005 model and what is the fuel use and service history?

Re: Gen 3 Diesel pump no power
Hi All,

Here are the symptoms. Sounds more like Computer to me:
• The engine management light does not always go off more off than on
• The engine battles to start, have to crank it a couple of times
• When it starts there is a cloud of grey/black smoke out the exhaust, like the old Dakota planes
• While travel on most occasions the engine seems to be searching or hunting it sounds as if the refs go up and down ever so slightly but do not register on the rev counter
• When the engine does start easily and the management light goes off the car runs perfectly, but do not switch it off as there is no guarantee it will go off on the next start.
• If the car starts with the management light off it does not come on during this travelling time.
• The management light does not go off during the travelling stages or come on while travelling, the starting mode stays constant. It only changes at the start of the journey.
• While the management light is off I let the car idle for a pit or coffee stop and it will stay off for the whole day but heaven help you if you switch the van off – there is no guarantee the management light will go off on the restart again
• The fuel consumption seems fine as I get about 9/10 kilos per litre with the aircons on at about 120 kilos per hour
Re: Gen 3 Diesel pump no power
Hi CATS,

I took the route of the on line mechanic and his take is that it is one of the sensors that are playing up. The diesel pump has been overhauled and the problem persists and is intermittant. Sometimes it runs fine and sometimes (when the Engine Management light comes on) it hen messes around. Trouble is: which sensor? The error code say injector pump but those things work or they don't!
Re: Gen 3 Diesel pump no power
Can definately be one of the sensors from the sound of your descriptions. I have also read some reports of them giving issues every now and again. Maybe first just try and remove them and clean the contact points. Are they not interchangeable? Maybe swap them around and see what happens. What are the cost on these sensors lately.

Wherte was this pump overhauled? If it was at Alan Black you would have had a one year guarantee. There is no doubt Alan Black is the best place to sort out this problem. I recently paid R25,000 at AB for a full pump and injector service as a preventative measure before our round trip via Kisane and Caprivi. There was nothing obvious wrong with the car before hand except that it did not pull the dyno to my liking.

Thanks for the input CATS,Bigwill.
The saga gets worse. Alan Black currently has the pump and cannot test it due to broken off wires on all the connectors and terminals broken off/bent inside the terminal box.
My brother drove the Pajero from Port Shepstone to Umhlanga Mitsubishi achieving 10km/l with the intermittant problem gone for the trip. Obviously not his pump or an idiot removed it by janking at the connections. Shocking. I have passed my brother the contact details of Imperial as well as Mitsubishi Head Office management.
