Hi all Pajerers
My name is Awie from Kitwe in Zambia, and own a 1993 4D56 swb manual Pajero with 260000 km on the clock. It is an absolute pleasure to drive this amazing go anyware, easy to drive, soft comfortable and luxury car. One problem however. The engine needs attention.
I also have a 1995 4m40 swb autobox Pajero with a damaged body The question is, can I do a complete engine/gearbox swap
I enjoy your weekly forum posts and the lively participation and sharing of knowledge by obvious experienced members, and looking forward to response to my query.

Welcome!
Any (well, almost any) transfer is possible, depending on your skills and wallet.
The 4d56 engine bears no resemblance to the 4m4* engines.
Nor does the transmission or transfer case.
For the above reasons the peripherals (alternator, steering pump, AC pump etc) won't fit either.
A transplant of the complete drive train (engine (with peripherals), transmission and transfer case) would be the easiest.
The following would need your attention / innovation:

The following would need your attention / innovation:
- Engine mountings
- Gearbox mountings
- Gear lever and boots (going from manual to auto)
- Pedals (should bolt on, though, knowing Mitsubishi)
- Prop shafts
- Connection of all peripherals
- Radiator hoses
- Intercooler scoop?
- Instrumentation
- Exhaust system
- I most probably omitted a few items!
Thank you Gerhard
Maybe the other option is to overhaul the 4d56.
