So gents
I have a second kid on the way and while I have a brand new platkar (fiat linea emotion) I need a bigger suv cause beastie is a swb and cannot handle the travelling needs of a family of 4.
We all know how the ladies love to pack...
So my question is: can I swap my 4m40 into a gen 2.5 or gen3 with a 3500 gdi engine?
The reason being that there are plenty of these with shot motors going for good prices.
Yes I could buy a lwb but I want the blister or gen3 style and a new (used) car is way too expensive at the moment.
Can the 4m40 be matched to the GDI box or do I need to swap the whole drivetrain?
If they can match, will the dash gauges work and can I still do the semi auto shift thing work?
What do I need to know about this prospective transplant?
The Gen 3 is very electronic (for its day) , the Autobox talks to the engine, the climate control talks to the engine as well, the immobiliser is hard wired into the engine amongst other things as well. I think if you change out a part of the drive train you will pick up problems.
4epajero did a 4m41 swap into a gen 1, it took lots of time and serious electrickery knowhow to make that work.
I would rather look to try and fit a 6g74 non-GDI motor complete with its ecu . Should be a lot easier as it would be a direct fit, the motors are a bit cheaper than the 4m40 AFAIK.

Thanks.
I know that in some eastern countries you do get a 4m40 engined gen3... Its their budget option.
My plan is to hack beastie and put its engine on the lwb of choice. Not buy a new engine.
I'm in no mood of fueling a thirsty petrol car...
If i go the new wngine route wouldnt a 6g72 be more cost effective? I know they come as standard on the gen3.
Can the 4m40 engine be applied to a gen 2.5?
I'm sure its not that very electronic.
But that idea of a non GDI is also good pity the fuel costs.
The SUV will be my daily as the fiat will be for the lady and kids (we are going to sell her honda crv).
If i can somehow have her agreeing i could keep beastie and get a petrol lwb for travelling...

6g72 is more thirsty than the 6g74 in most Pajeros due to it having to work harder. Your best bet would be a gen 2 or 2.5 with a manual transmission if you want to keep your motor.
For what it worth, sell your van and buy a lwb with a 4m40 in it. It will be far cheaper than any conversion you plan to do.

Thanks for the replies, tips and knowledge. in the next months i will see what comes along and how much can i get for my Van since pajeros are "hated" in Mozambique and do not attract good resale values. Although that can mean that i can score a bargain of note in the "3rd hand" market
