The recent posts about similar problems being possibly caused by injectors rang alarm bells but I thought that at my fairly low milage this should not be a problem. ... Should I be getting the injectors replaced? Is there any other possible cause for the pinging?
I would have someone look at this. Pinging may be caused by a leaky injector and it may be caused by pump timing amongst other things.

If the vehicle is under warranty then take it to the dealer and put your concern in writing.

If it is not under warranty - why not give Haydn in Pietermaritzburg a call?

When I had my injectors replaced (with refurbished ones) and my pump checked last year I think it cost about R7k with a before and after dyno test. That was at Alan Black in Springs.

Andrew, thanks for that information, I'll get it checked out. Do you have any contact details for Haydn in Pmb?

Re: Engine failure
Hi sorry to hear about your problem I had on the 14 of December also the same problem with my 3.2DID 80km out of Windhoek on the dirt road driving as Support vehicle for my son for the Desert Dash. The car was towed in to Windhoek because of School holidays the garage only opened on 13 January also like your Pajero it was piston nr4 with a whole.
Re: Engine failure
Dunerider. Kilos? Have you ever had injectors checked and or replaced? This hole in piston thing is popping up every now and again and I am trying to determine if my theory of rather replacing injectors every 100000km or so will help to prevent this problem.

Re: Engine failure
Hi all, after reading Entabeni,s 6th Feb post I should change my subject to the same as his!!
My piston damage is the same even down to split in gudgeon pin hole.
My engine is being fixed by Eagleharm engineering in Springfield Park Durban, they were recommended by agents and so far I am happy with them.I should get my car back next week. One thing they did say was that they only fit after market pistons, not sure why maybe a supply problem
Just bye the way this was the first trip where I added two stroke oil to 50ppm diesel,I wonder if this caused any after burn after TDC on the power stroke.I also had three 500 ppm fillups on the West Coast from Senderlings Drift down.Maybe one had water ect in it :(

Re: Engine failure
Hi PJB,

Thanks for the posting and photo.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

1. Any chance that you could post any more images showing the crack - for instance from the gudgeon pin side?
2. Had you experienced anything that sounded like pre-ignition / pinking?
