Absolutely, if the right oil doesn't fix the ticking, then new lifters should be your next move.

Re: V 6 ticking lifters
Hi
On the 6G74 Engine, what can one expect to pay for 6 new lifters + Labour for fitment?

Is it worthwile tying to clean them as decribed in the technical library, or is that Mitsibushi technical memo only for Diesel Hydraulic lifters?

I used Delo 400 and did 10-15mm overfill, everything, and although quieter, they still do their "mating call" on start-up in the mornings.

Re: V 6 ticking lifters
The lifters are more than R200 each at the dealers and if I recall correctly about R90 each at Masterparts. I replaced all 24 at once and went with the Masterparts ones. So far so good, has done about 20k without any problem, hassle or noise.I do not know what the labour would be but I think the heads need to come off so it may be quite expensive, depending on who you get to do the job. Probably better to have all 24 done at once?

I really believe that a noisy lifter at start-up is still very much in spec. If it stays noisy, then you have more reason for concern.

Hi

I also have a '97 Pajero LWB 3.5 V6 6G74 with 220 000 km on the clock.
When i bought it on 160 000 km in 2009 i flushed the engine, bought a 20 L drum Delo 400 ,over filled it about 10mm , drove for about a 1000 km,replaced oil+filter and filled with Delo 400 again.

Did another 5000 km again and still the ticking lifters would come and go within the same day..

Eventually bought Shell 25w60 and the lifters were dead quiet.

After about 7000km the lifters would start to tick faintly...
..until i drain the oil and fill again with Shell Helix 25w60.

Ive been doin that for the past 60 000km and the engine is the quitest this way.

By the way...when i bought the Pajero on 160 000km there wasnt a drop of oil on the dipstick ...previous owner didnt check oil regularly..it was seriously low on oil and was driven by them that way.

I drove it to the nearest garage the night i bought it and filled it with Shell helix 20w50 ..drove it home for 20km.

The next morning did the Wynn's engine flush thing and Filled with new oil as stated above.

That was 60 000km ago ..and the engine is still going strong ..even after the bad treatment of the previous owner.

My first non-platkar ...and i will always love the Gen2 LWB..

Only do gravel roads and holiday trips with it..from guateng to Mosselbay 5 times in a row Decembers...it never let me down once...

...always be a Pajero fan..

Re: V 6 ticking lifters
So there is definitely another oil to put on the "must consider" list: Shell 25W60.

Interesting, because the OME spec is 20W50 and DELO is 15W40 - the one favourite is slightely thinner and the other one thicker.

When I had my 3.5V6 Blister in the previous century :o , I added ProLong and it seemed to solve the problem - I have since been convinced that it is a big NO-NO because of residu deposits.

My current Pajero has been living off Castrol GTX 20W50 since new - that is what the dealer sticks in. My lifters have always been super quiet, but I changed over to DELO 400 when I did an intermediate service before a Damaraland trip during May. So the beast is now on a DELO diet for the foreseable future. It is due for a sceduled service now and I would love to keep the dealer stickers going in my service book, but still need to negotiate the oil issue with them.

Re: V 6 ticking lifters
Hi
I have owned my 1999 3.5 blister fender for 200 000 km, it's on 330k now. It had noisy lifters since about the 200 000 km mark, used to drive me nuts. Tried every suggestion under the sun without any real success, eventually spent the R10k and replaced all the lifters with original parts, best money I ever spent.
Had the work done by Mitsubishi tech in anderbolt, Boksburg. :D
Re: V 6 ticking lifters
My 1997 SWB 3.0 V6 with the very the common lifter tick was driving me nuts.
Symptoms:
3 years ago it was noisy only for about 5 seconds on start-up.
2 years ago the noise did not want to go away after start-up but when I switched it off and restart immediately afterwards it was quiet. My thoughts on this were that the oil pickup could be clogged up and I was thinking of replacing the oil pump...luckily i didn’t. I did flush the engine and replace the oil with Shell helix 15w40 (diesel). This seemed to make a difference for a while.
2 months ago the restart did not work anymore and the lifters were almost always making a noise. The funny thing is that sometimes it would go quiet for a couple of seconds but then the noise would gradually come back.

I then decided to try all the things on the Forum:
No1 flushed the engine, replace the filter and use DELO 400 –This made no difference
No2 Overfilled with DELO 400 ± 500ml. This made no difference and I think it is a bad idea to overfill.
No3 Removing the air in the lifters by the procedure in the workshop manual –gradually rev to 3000 in 15 sec and then idle for 15 sec- repeat up to 30 times. This did nothing.

Then I saw a video on YouTube- How to clean Hydraulic lash adjusters.- and I thought I was going to give it a bash.
So on Friday evening I got to work... 2 hours later the rocker arms were out and on the workbench. They looked very clean and I could not see any wear on the rockers or on the lifters. The lifters felt as solid as a rock. I took the first one out and started to clean, the oil that came out was very clean and the lifter did not feel sticky at all. At that point I was thinking that I was wasting my time so I phone a mechanic friend. He said he think it was better to buy new lifters ... so I decided to leave it until the next morning.
On Saturday I was thinking to myself that taking everything apart was not really that big of a job and if I have to do it again to install new lifters then I can do it again. But for now I was going to clean as per YouTube video.
3 hours later I started the Pajero and it was absolutely quiet. I really couldn’t believe it but it is now 150km later and not a single tick.
