Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
I am thinking of getting one of the lock-up kits... not really for highway use, but for driving in thick sand.

I find that when you are driving in sand, relatively slowly (say 30km/h) the Pajero has the TC unlocked permanently.

I have had consumption around 15L/100km - not sure if the TC lock-up kit will improve that.

Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
the kit is not suitable for low speed low revs.

The auto lacks a heavy flywheel that smoothes out combustion pulses at low speeds, low rpm.

With an auto the momentum of the vehicle at high speed with TC locked up acts as flywheel and at low speeds the TC unlocks and the slip in the TC takes up the impulses.

If you lock the TC at low speeds and low rpm you will have horrid vibrations in the car, and may damage other components due to no dampening of the combustion pulses.

Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
i made my own tc lock kit with this features :
-tc lock is activated by on/off switch but only in sport mode
-tc lock is disabled on first gear (this can be switched off)

driving with this features is more comfortable ;)

if someone want this kit , i can make one for you
Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
I would like to hear feedback from the guys that have installed the kit. User experience, does it work (I know it works, but does it do what you thought it would do), improved highway fuel consumption?

Issues, conns, pros?

Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
the torque converter has a clutch inside that can lock the drivetrain solid to the engine. Like a manual car with a flywheel and clutch.

Only in few scenarios does the factory ecu lock this clutch so the torque converter is slipping creating heat and wasting energy. This energy came from the fuel.

By fitting the kit you have control on when the clutch locks up with the flick of a switch.

ie. at the flick of a switch your car becomes a manual. In other works if you keep the switch on ad come to a standstill the engine will stall.

Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
Hi, be very careful when using this lock up as the clutch is much smaller than that fitted to a manual transmission and can easily get over stressed and cause even more heat than not locked. I have one installed in my Nissan Patrol and use it very rarely, handy for low range down steep rocky slopes but watch out if you get too slow as then engine starts to stress .. I once used the lock up and drove in manual mode for about 100 km in outback Oz and the transmission got very hot... DON'T use it for towing ..

Anyway that's my 2 cents worth on this subject.

Hi

Sounds interesting. What about fitting it to a Pajero Sport.
Keep us posted on progress please.

Re: Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
i use tc locking everyday when i travel to work (about 30km) and my fuel consumption goes lower (from 10 to 9 litr./100km)

my car is LWB 3.2DI-D 121kW
