Those "Crickets" in the engine bay
After reading CATS's saga I am very concerned that something may be brewing with my Paj as well. There is a whistling noise from under the bonnet only when the motor is being pushed very hard on an incline with a heavy load such as a caravan in tow.
It had been described by other members before as some thing that sounds like a petrol engine pinging. The best description so far was that it sounds like a bag of crickets having a ball.
Speculation I've heard was that it could be a cracked manifold or intercooler. Some mechanic also said it may be the waste-gate blowing off excessively high pressure built-up under those conditions. I do not have an EGT gauge so I am worried that the EGT is getting out of hand and is causing a kind of detonation. What is your experience with this problem to date? I have not yet seen a good explanation of this noise. Have you? Why does this only happen under extreme engine loading? And why no immediate permanent damage.

Dont let my incidence cause you worry. Many more Dids running around with higher mileages than mine. Trouble free. I would not worry about EGT as I NEVER experienced any high EGT ever! The Did engine ECU is pretty good in controlling that I think.
