A bit of hard driving seemed to have cleared out the system. Did add two stroke just in case :)
Thanks @Lock, of course you did subsequently suffer a holed piston (twice), so I'm not totally encouraged!

Re: National Park driving, CEL and error code 41
I have the same problem when travelling in Kruger Park with a 2001 automatic DiD (315 000 km). Very disturbing, engine runs rough, black smoke from exhaust :( , and accelerator response is slow at first then a burst of power. The problem sorts itself out after 10-15 km on open road outside the Park. This problem started only after work was done on the engine - initially injectors were replaced and soon after engine was overhauled due to cracked head - this included adjustments/tuning of the diesel pump. Before the overhaul the car did not have this problem in the Park.https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/post ... =24&t=5715#

@rmh, Thanks for this valuable info.

1. Were the injectors replaced with new ones or refurbished ones?
2. Who did the work?
3. Do you know why the head cracked?

Re: National Park driving, CEL and error code 41
Hi Andrew
I had new injectors installed only as a precaution at 290k. Mitspro did the work and at 296k Freek also replaced head, pistons and main bearings when the Pajero overheated due to cracked head. I cannot be sure why head cracked but guess damage is due to clogging of radiator with grass seeds driving off-road on dunes in Kalahari and overheating when car had only 125k on clock. Since then, over a period of six years the temperature ran high on four occasions while towing heavy bush trailer uphill. I concede I drove the automatic diesel often very hard at (too) high speed over very long distances! It finally overheated on a solo trip driven sedately on a cool day in mountainous area. Pistons showed very limited wear after 296k but we decided to do a complete overhaul with new parts only I am still towing the bush trailer once a year over Kalahari dunes but now with custom made guard for radiator. No other problems, still has original turbo etc.

@rmh,

Thanks for the feedback.

Yup, the holed piston was at least two years and 50 000 later, BUT it could have been the start of the troubles.

A follow up to my OP of this thread.

Since departing Musina I have had no incidences of the CEL coming on and Dusty is running fine.

Today I filled up and treated Dusty to 2 bottles of Mitsubishi Red Bull for diesels (Diesel Fuel system cleaner). Definitely makes it the most expensive fill up ever at about approx R132 a bottle! But assuredly cheaper than a rebuild.
Re: National Park driving, CEL and error code 41
Hello All

I wonder if this is somehow more prone to older Pajero's? Swambo and I were in Northern Kruger this past December for a week. I never experienced any such problems - generally the fastest we travel is around 40 km/h which is the lowest speed cruise control work. or slower if it is on a straight bit of road and I get the Valk into 3rd and just let her idle. Also the first 2 days was over 40degC - and no problems.

The Valk is a late 2006 (read registered in 2007) with very little km's on the clock.

Hallo Gerhardt, my 2001 3.2 DiD also never had problems in Kruger during many visits over a 11-year period, until engine was overhauled at 295 000 km. Now I see serious black smoke and experience uneven running in the Park, but no other problems.

@rmh, Thanks for the feedback.
Please could I ask some more detail?

1. When the engine was overhauled, did you have refurbished injectors or did you have new injectors installed?
2. Was the diesel pump rebuilt / replaced?
3. Who did the injector / pump work part of the overhaul?
