Had a chip from SAC installed, but experienced the same stalling at startup and pull-away, so just removed it and plugged the wires with correct plug from SAC. Wasted money therefore. No problems so far since removal. Would also like to know what was changed on newer Pajeros? Cheers!

Ok....its a few months later......time for some feedback.....I finally had the guts to remove the chip. Drove around a few blocks. All seems ok. Driving to Bloemfontein tomorrow. Will give feedback on powern and consumption after the weekend.

Chip details: Dastek piggyback computers. Unichip D121FCA4.

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
If you have the "chip" use it, otherwise Well maybe...
My older Pajero (chipped) feels like it has a lot more power and feels like it wants to run more than the newer one (Unchipped) However, The two engines are completelly different, so apples for apples is not applicable. The 2002 is lighter on fuel so maybe yes?

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
It's Tuesday already.....time for feedback.

Scenario: From Meyerton to Bloemfontein, we only had the empty roof rack. From Bloemfontein back to Meyerton, we had a roof top tent on the roof rack. Drove from Meyerton to Bloem, filled up. Drove around a bit, mostly open roads and some very lekker dirt raods. Loaded the roof top tent, drove back to Meyerton, filled up in Meyerton.

Average speed both directions, approx 110km/h (kept cruise control at about 105 - 115km/h)

Consumption:
Meyerton to Bloem: 8.03km/l
Bloem, gravel raods, Meyerton: 8.31km/l.
I can't explain why with the tent I got better millage, maybe it's got to do with how "full" the car was filled at the various stations.

Power: Definitely less power without the chip. Overtaking had the biggest effect. Usually, just put foot and go....now, had to try a little harder to get going. Overall, the power was more than enough. No complaints other than adjusting overtaking opportunities.

Other feedback: Gear changes feel smoother, BUT, 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th happens at higher revs. Especially when you are climbing. Revs go to about 3500-3800rpm before changing. I'm not used to this.....diesels aren't suppose to rev high. :?

I really thought that I will get 10km/l. That has been done before...on a trip to Bloemftein but we didn't had the roofrack back then. Next time, I will remove the roofrack and see what happens then. If I still don't get close to 10km/l...chip will probably go back in, go for a remap, and see what it does....but this will be the last resort.

The Pajero did go for a service on Tuesday, air filter was replaced as the previous one was a bit dirty. This can also have an influence on the consumption. Before the service, the pajero just didn't feel right, struggled to pull, something was not in place. (Always make sure they check your air filter with services...or rather just replace with every service..Cost about R300). After the service and chip removal, driving around town felt allot better, so I believe that the dirty air filter had a huge effect. Without the chip, the pajero pulled better than before the service and with the chip....for town driving.

For the next few months, mostly town driving will be done, so I can monitor "traffic" consumption and later this year, hopefully I will do a longer trip again where I can remove the roofrack and compare stats then. Since I bought the pajero, I did a little over 24000km, average consumption is just under 8km/l. Worst: 4.xxkm/l, Best: 10.xxkm/l (dont have tablet with me now).
Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
Hi Marius
The empty roof rack increases my fuel consumption by about 10%. This is on the open road at +120km/h With a loaded roof rack it is even worse. With the speedo on 140 (130 gps speed) my consumption dropped to 6 k’s p/l! It only takes 15 min to take the roof rack off, but you do need at least one handlanger! My only problem is I always need the roof rack for something when it is off and almost never while it is on. :( I recommend removing it between trips, depending on how often you use it. The fuel saving is worth the time and effort in removing and refitting. By the way, I only remove the rack itself and leave the pillars. Removing the pillars is more work, and remember to mark their exact position or the rack screws wont align.

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
Does the chip help with turbo lag?

I have a chip in my Gen 4. It was done by a reputable place in the garden route and the installing included dyno testing etc. According the dyno printout my 3.2 now makes 161kw. I have no idea if its good or bad as my knowledge of the 3.2 is very limited.

However after a doing the Waterford sand trail here in the Northern Cape I was a bit disappointed with the out of the blocks performance in 4LLC and auto box stick in 2.

Am tempting to remove the chip at the next service at the stealer, simply as I do not have any before and after experience.

On the plus side she pulls my xplorer as if its not there compared to the wife's 3.0 BT-50 Mazda
