Hi
Looking for some info on rebuild vs replacement of a 6G74 engine in a Gen 3. I had the had gasket replaced in nov 2013 as the engine overheated a while ago. It took quite a while for the gasket to develop a hole, but in the process, some water was sucked into the cylinders. About 1000km after the job, a rumble started in the engine at high revs or when letting go of the throttle. Freek at Mitspro diagnosed main bearings failing. He quoted me around R12k to fix, which may included replacing the oil pump and machining the block and crank if they are damaged. I previously paid R8k for the head gasket job.
The question is: should I go ahead and fix the old engine that already has 285k km on or should I look at replacing it? I'm not sure if I'll find another 6g74 (3.5l), but I think a non-mivec 6G75 (3.8l) might be possible. Has anyone done anything like this?

Hi Pierre
I am in the same boat, you can buy the 6G74 motor in SA from Japan auto for 24000 rand. The motor is verified to have under 100000 km's on it. To redo the motor with rings and bearings and engineering for 15k is not bad, assuming that you already did the valve guides and seals when you did the cylinder head. The general rule you can apply is that if you are going to open a motor with 285 k on it, then you don't partially overall it, you must completely overall or buy the import motor. Complete overall would cost around 25k.
I see you posted in April so hope this helps.

Wow. R24k for a complete Jap engine:o
That will hardly buy you a set of diesel injectors;)

Roelf! You are exaggerating. R24000 will buy you a few sets of injectors. Almost 4 sets to be truth full!
To get back on topic - I would rebuild your old engine.

Ahh - OK. Is that what they cost! Even more reason for me to fix my old non common rail engine.RoelfleRoux wrote:Wow. R24k for a complete Jap engine:o

And of course more reason for you to tell us all that long distance the petrol works out cheaper to run. :-×

In all honestly. I don't believe that at all. The only real saving in my book was made at purchace time.
Lexus V8 Conversion! Yes, OK I have not personally done one, but I wished I had. Basically did a rebuild on my motor, and in the long run the V8 conversion seems to have been the better option. If you are going for a replacement motor, you can get the Lexus motor, gearbox and ECU for about R 10 000. Way better than a Pajero diesel pump service @ R 27 000
If you can feel the grass between your toe's, your flying too low!

Hi All,
I have read this trail with interest. My problem is easier. My old 6g74 motor is dead, finished, Kaput. It ran a bearing in a big way and the block appears to be in a condition not to re-bore. SO I have tried everywhere, can anyone help me with a 6g74 (coil) DOHC 24 Valve motor, import or recon for a good deal. Need it urgent......
A little birdie told me that a 6g75 can be made to fit in my 1997 pajero? TRUE?????

Why dont you put in the 6g72? Its more reliable and you can turbocharge it if you so wish.
