• overnight accommodation will depend on where you stay, (for two people) eg
  • Sani Lodge R380 bed only for the rondavel (two people)
  • Katse Lodge R750 for the room (two people), breakfasts included
  • Glen Reenen R540 for the self-catering rondavel (two people)
• we eat simple and cheap when on a tour like that
• souvenirs
• 'dop' etc

It can be cheap, it can be expensive. You decide.

PS In July you run the risk of some of the roads being closed due to snow!

I have done it Friday 05 March 2010 and it can be a vehicle breaker. My Pajero was 2nd Low Range to avoid damage and allow me enough time for direction over and around obstical selection. Baviaans done both ways in December 2009 on the same day and it was a walk in the park compared to Sani.

I really started to think that either I'm a 'moffie' or the Touareg is!

I agree that although short, the Sani Pass (in it's current condition) is way more difficult than the Baviaans.

Hi, I've done the Sani Pass on 13 February 2010 and I must say it has deteriorated significantly since my last trip. The lower portion of the pass is still relatively good gravel road. As one progresses to about 2/3 of the way the gravel appears to be washed away with only the underlaying rocks remaining. The ride therefore becomes slower and one has to be careful of path selection. The trip was nonetheless easy in my GEN 3 LWB 3.2 DID and it was not necessary to go forwards and backwards in tight corners going up. My Pajero's under carraige did not touch once, while the shallow dongas and resultant axle twisters was no challange for the Pajero. The road demands your attention but it is still accessible to even softroaders as a BMW X5 and Hyundai Tucson made it up after me. It is a lovely relaxing drive with beautiful scenery. Just remember your passports and vehicle ownership papers.

I'm looking to do a similar trip - but in the reverse direction.

I just wanted to know if there is a direct(ish) route from Katse dam to Sani Pass? My garmin tells me I have to go all the way up to Butha-Buthe again (A25 and then A1), or can I got via the Thaba-Tseka (A3)? I see there is also a route B804 near Ha-Phomolo that goes from the A1 to the A25 - not sure if anyone has ever driven this road?

Also, I'm leaving from Fouriesburg, going down to Katse dam - how long would you expect that trip to take? And would I be able to do some of the passes on the A1, before turning back and going down the A25?

Took my Pajero up the Sani pass 6 weeks ago. In two wheel drive! Clearance, clearance and yes, clearance. Yes, could see that with rain or snow this could be a tester, but on the day it was disappointingly easy. There was a Disco 3 in front of me, and even the Landy made it up without too much fuss. :} Played in the snow and had lunch at the Sani Top Lodge ( Poor service, and bad food ) before heading back to Underberg. Fantastic trip!
