Re: 2000 DID Diesel questions
Hi Theo,

Welcome to the Pajero family.

To address your complete post will be quite a thesis, so maybe we should take it bit by bit.

The diesel has all the same parts as any petrol car, except it doesn’t have spark plugs. Service interval on that car was 5000km when it came out, but if you use 500ppm (or 50ppm) diesel, then 7500km interval is fine. Diff, gearbox and transfer box should get new oil every 60 000km. Most guys here prefer to buy the original filters from the dealer and use Caltex DELO 400 15W40 multigrade engine oil.

The most common preventative maintenance on these cars includes replacing of the guide on the timing chain and the oil pressure sensor housing. They can get brittle over time and are cheap to replace.

The 4x4 system is pretty easy to operate. The Pajero has an open centre diff in the transfer case, which allows you to drive on tar and such in the 4H mode. This is then the same as having a “permanent four wheel drive” car – like a Cruiser or a Discovery. The next option in 4HLc, which locks the centre diff, in this mode it is like any 4x4 bakkie out there. Best to only use this on surfaces where the wheels can slip a little bit, otherwise you will “wind up” the drive train. 4LLc is low range and used when negotiating very steep slopes or to crawl slowly over very rugged or rocky terrain.
You mention some “faults”. I recommend you explain those to us as best as possible and then I’m sure the clever guys on this forum will jump in with advice. Have a look at all the different sections on this forum and then split your faults into the relevant sections, that way you have the best chance to have your posts noticed and addressed. Please don’t spare any detail when you explain the problems to us, the more the guys understand what the issues are, the better they’ll be able to help you.

Good luck,
Roelf
