Hi
Have a 2014 SWB did and have just had the 10 000 km service done . During a trip from Cape Town to Joburg noted a pinging noise has developed in the engine . This is most noticeable under light to medium throttle , and goes away under high load throttle , also it cannot be heard at idle at all. Agents recon this is normal , but I have explained that this has not been noticed since new , and therefore cannot be normal . Also noted slight black smoke when throttle is depressed , which was not the case before . Has anybody experienced this on their gen 4 did , and can you offer any advice . Thanks Chris
I would get the injectors and pump timing checked but wait, at 10000kms I cant imagine it to be suspect! Maybe fill up again with high altitude diesel first and see if it persist. Black smoke is normal on a diesel at throttle.

Hi Chris,
First post! Welcome!
As CATS says - you don't want and should not expect to hear pinging at 10k km. Don't just accept what the dealer says.
Find a place close to your dealership where you can induce this pinging at will and then ask them to let you take a demo car off the floor and see if it does the same thing under the same circumstances.
If it does not, or if you are still unhappy, tell your dealer it is unacceptable and you want to speak to the dealer principal.
Also make sure you have advised them in writing of your concerns and have their signature to that effect.

Hi Andrew and CATS
Thanks for your replies . Went to the 3 dealers in Cape Town and all 3 mentioned they can hear the pinging noise at mid throttle , but all 3 mentioned that they have not listened that closely to other 3,2 did engines , so cannot be sure if other engines make the same noise . Two guys mentioned that my Pajero is very quiet and hense we can hear this "diesel type" noise . I drove a new Pajero and could hear the same noise slightly , but indeed the engine was noisier , which is a little strange . Anyway , I have got the diagnostics test showing all ok , so if something does go wrong I have the test results as proof that I brought it to their attention . I know these engines are very reliable , it is just irritating when I have not heard this noise in other Diesel engines . But anyway , thank you very much for your help . BRGDS Chris

I think what you are experiencing is diesel clatter.
Its part and parcel of all diesels and the only reason you might not hear it on other vehicles is due to slightly better insulation.
The sound does get worse over time so if you drive say a 4 year old diesel it will be more audible. It happens in every gear under low throttle and is very pronounced under cold conditions.
As for the black smoke,i have noticed especially newer diesel cars all have a small puff of black smoke from new, even the new rangers and even BmW
