I have a 1996 Pajero 3.5 GLS LWB. Over the last 3 months it has become very difficulty to start. Once started it runs smoothly and strong. If I then turn off the vehicle and restart, it starts straight away! But if my vehicle has been stopped to +/- 40 minutes and longer it struggles to start(hot or cold). It then takes about +40 seconds to start. We have check the fuel pump, recently swopped the inlet manifold (air leak by the butterfly valve shaft), and the engine temperature computer sensors but with no success. Please help - Brian P

The battery is new and is fully charged. The battery turns the engine over swiftly with purpose. Could it be over-fueling as when it does start and it smells of fuel and gives a small puff of black smoke before it settles down?
I am a bit disappointed that no one has any suggestion.
Have you checked the in tank fuel filter/strainer? Maybe it is blocked and the pump takes a while to pressurise the system? My paj started easier and quicker when I cleaned my intank filter and intake strainer. I had it out on a Sunday when agents were closed so I just back washed the filter with clean petrol and lots of rust and debris came out... Stopgap fix but worked a little for me.

We have checked the fuel line pressure with a pressure gauge and it is normal(on the high side)
When it does start it blows a little bit of white smoke and some petrol out of the exhaust. Like it is leaking the pressure through the injectors when stopped? Like "over fuelling"

We have found that fuel was leaking into the top of the engine via the injectors after it was switch off, thus flooding occurred making it difficult to re-start the engine. The injectors have been replaced and the problem has been resolved.
