ECU testing?? Who can do it?
Hi All

Has anyone here ever had ECU problems? Or has anyone had an ECU tested?

My Gen3 has been lacking power and gives error code 41 (that's actually an understatement - it is as slow as a Caterpillar). Everything has been checked and swapped - diesel pump, throttle body, turbo, fuel filter, air filter; tank was checked for dirt, fuel lines checked for leaks...

It does not smoke and idles fine. But it feels like the accelerator pedal only works the first half of its movement, thereafter it's completely dead.

Now I have been told by the Stealers to replace the ECU. Only problem it that they quote me about R20K for a new one, and they also say that I have to replace the immobiliser with the ECU, because the two are "paired" in the factory and a new ECU will not work with the old immobiliser (something I find hard to believe).

I don't mind spending the R20K if I am guaranteed that my Paj's troubles would be at an end. The Stealers say that if the new ECU is fitted and the problem still persists then they cannot take the part back and refund me, because electronic parts are not allowed to be refunded.

I cannot find a place in SA that can test a Pajero Gen3 3.2DiD ECU. I have, however, found ECUtesing.com which is in the UK. Does anyone have experience with them???

Any constructive comments would be appreciated!

There was a thread on the Ausie forum a while back where the guy had to replace a part of the ECU.

Will search for the thread tonight. Maybe it will give you some ideas or suggestions.

Re: ECU testing?? Who can do it?
When my injector pump burnt out, they thought my ecu sustained damage. I sent it to ECU technologies in Plattekloof, Cape Town. They could test it and see if any hardware parts were faulty, mine tested ok.

Not sure how in depth they can check for software issues, especially with secretive mitsusbishi MUT II protocol used to communicate with it?

Google them and speak to Matt (I think).

EDIT. Have you checked your accelerator pedal potentiometer, your pajero uses drive by wire technology. If that unit is faulty, the ecu isn't receiving the correct voltage input vs throttle pedal position.

EDIT 2: I see I have answered you before on the error code 41 in a previous thread by yourself; have you done the tests on the throttle body with the vacuum hoses disconnected, and checked the accelerator pedal like I suggested?

All the above have been tested!

I tried all the search words I could think of but cant seem to trace the post that I remember from some time ago on the Ausie forum. Apologies :-(

Re: ECU testing?? Who can do it?
hi
If Stealers advised that ECU needs to be replaced they may have a point as when your pump burnt out it could have short-circuited and burnt a circuit in the ECU. This happened to me recently when I inadvertently shorted out the earth wire with an output live either on my MAF or TPS when I was doing some tests.
I was referred by Stealers workshop supervisor (who knows my friend who lectures at the trade school and myself as we have the same old gen 2 SWB) to Combined Electronics in Plattekloof who gave me a quote and fixed my ECU for about R3000 The important thing is to give them your fault code and what had happened e.g. pump burnt out. I was lucky as I had a circuit diagram which I gave to them so that the could identify which circuit could be affected. Their number is 021-9303549 you can speak to Henry when you get there. Important you may have to give them your key and ignition switch complete with immobilizer unit.
The other guy I which another Pajero workshop in Plantation Rd referred me to is Dimitri that is DS Automotive Electronics 021-5550200. But his wife says they do not do private work only for service workshops. They will need the MUT II diagnostic fault code, key, ignition switch and immobilizer.

Thanks for your response, however, my pump never "burnt out"!

If you are looking for someone to test an ECU, AUTO ECU in Bedfordview are about your best bet. However they cannot do all and every ECU - give them a call - very helpful lot.
