Advice RE new motor or recon (currently has 4D56)
Hi guys,
I need help and advice regarding my 1998 GLX.

Mine has 250k on the clock and has blown a ring (that's what it seems like)
It is standing in a garage at the moment, as I've not had a clear answer or solid solution, so I'm posting up here to get the best advice from the community.

In order to get it back on the road, I've thought of a few options, but I've narrowed it down to 2:

a) fit another Mitsu diesel motor
b) take a chance and open up this motor, and have it reconditioned

-----------
Here's the thing, my Paj is 1998 (originally from Zim apparently)
It's a GLX, LWB with a 2.5 naturally aspirated diesel 4D56 motor. (Quite unusual?) (I have attached a photo for reference)

Your advice here please:

a) I have the opportunity right now to fit a 4M40 2.8 naturally aspirated motor - Will this motor fit into my Paj?

What, if any modifications/adapters etc will I need?

Has anyone in the community got experience with this transplant, and could you share some advice please?

1998 2.5 with 4D56 motor
b) Alternatively, who can I talk to in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town about a recon/looking at this motor?
Please recommend someone who you guys know to have experience with this type of motor/Pajeros in general.
(This is my second choice, as the 2.5 n/a motor is quite underpowered)

I'm really keen on this 4m40 motor, just want to be sure it'll fit with minimal missions, and that it's a good choice.

I really really appreciate any advice, thanks in advance guys!
Re: Advice RE new motor or recon (currently has 4D56)
Obviously an import - the local Gen2 never came fitted with the 4d56 engine.
  1. The 2.8 (4m40) td engine does not bolt onto your transmission.
  2. I would have it reconditioned.
  3. Apparently the Hyundai 2.5TD engine, as used on the H100 bakkie is in fact a 4d56 built under license, and bolts straight on.
These should be available from scrap yards.

Thanks for that 4ePajero!!

That's what I needed to know.
I really appreciate the advice, will open up this engine and see what can be done, and/or investigate the H100 plant.

Re: Advice RE new motor or recon (currently has 4D56)
Gerhard is correct. The 4D56 motor is fitted to the latest Hyundai one tonne bakkie. It was also fitted to pre-1996 Mitsubishi Colts. I would look for a turbo motor from the scrapyards, even if you have to recondition that. I had to drive our 4D56 from Pietermaritzburg to Richards Bay with a blown turbo, so I know how gutless it is without the extra puff! With the turbo motor you will think you are running on nitro after the non turbo motor.
