good morning all

which would u say works better with the 2007 pre new shape pajero - the unichip or the racepro chip?
i also understand that my pajero 2007 3.2(pre change) has a electronic fuel pump and the post change is common rail. is this true and what is the difference

thanks

Re: Chip
Hi Charl, I see this is your first post. Welcome.
Your Pajero model is commonly referred to as Gen3 and the following one obviously Gen4.

Your diesel pump isn't electronic, but mechanical. The engine management is however electronic. The pump has a piston for each cylinder and it thus delivers a squirt of diesel directly into the cylinder (through an injector) to initiate the burn.

The Gen4 with the common rail injection has a high pressure pump that delivers fuel constantly into the common rail "reservoir", where it sits under extremely high pressure. This high pressure fuel extends right to the "back" of the injectors. Electronic signals from the ECU then informs the individual injectors on when and how to open and allow fuel into the cylinder.

To chip or not (or which chip) has been heavily debated. I'm not going to go there.

I have a 2010 GLX LWB. I had it chipped with the Uni chip at Turbo Man in Witbank. I am extremely satisfied with the chip. I found the no4 setting to the best. My fuel consumption is also, as far as I am concerned, excelent. I get on the open road 11km/l, sometimes more sometimes less and in town more or less 9km/l. I must also state that I consider myself as an economical driver with a light foot, I accelerate gradually on the pull away but when it is needed to overtake I will floor it.
The power increase is also very good and I can actually overtake with ease which was not possible before the chip.
The guy that installed the chip has been installing the Uni chip for quite a long time now and he is highly qualified in diesel engine technology.
The advantage of the Uni chip is that you can choose between 5 settings inside the cab with a switch. So you can instantly switch from standard power to max powwer with the turning of the knob.
The owners of Turbo Man both drive Pajeros and their vehicles are also chipped.

The guy that helped me is Johan Smit and his no is 082 870 7450. You can mention my name.

I have a 2012 Pajero Sport with the 3,2 turbo diesel engine. Earlier this year I had the Unichip fitted by Dastek in Pretoria.
To date I am very impressed with both the increase in power throughout the rev range and an equally impressive improvement in fuel consumption.
The installation took around 2,5 hours and it was done while I waited. The staff at Dastek are also great they took their time to explain the various options to me and their waiting area is comfortable with a coffee machine and plenty of magazines to keep you occupied. Steves Auto Clinic also supply and fit the UniChip but as the UniChip is manufactured by Dastek it made more sense to have it fitted by Dastek. It was also a few hundred Rand cheaper at Dastek. My only regret is not having this chip fitted two years ago when I bought the vehicle.
Re: Chip
Charl,
Please take note that both (happy)Pajeros mentioned in this thread has the more modern electronically controlled commonrail engine.
Re: Chip
Charl,
Give Dastek a call and speak to Cornel. He has a Gen3 that's chipped and I am sure he will take you for a drive to feel the difference. Dastek manufacture and develop the Unichip and I am sure it is best to do the chip there.

I chipped my 2009 3.2 Pajero about 2 weeks ago and must say I am very happy with the performance increase and it looks like the consumption is also better.

Tell him Gerhard referred you. ..

Re: Chip
 Hi chaps,

I had the Dastec chip installed to my Gen 4 in December and immediately left on an overland trip through Botswana, Caprivi, Vic Falls, Kruger and home to Maputo. The chip has 2 options, one just a standard chip installation and no variable settings and option 2 has a 5 settings switch which you can choose the level of "enhancement" to the standard mapping settings. Option 1 is does not allow the engine to rev up and acts as an additional security measure. Option 2 is your vehicles standard factory settings unaltered. Options 3,4 & 5 vary in an increasing manner of enhancement. I tow an Eco 4 off-road trailer and was on the 5th setting for most of the trip. I covered 5600 km,s with an average fuel consumption of under 10l per 100km. For a short stint without the trailer I got under 7l per 100km!! This is about 20 to 30% improvement in consumption in my experience. Some pertinent points also to consider though is that I traveled at a steady 110 - 120kms per hour. Botswana is very flat so not much climbing.

Without the trailer, the option 5 setting is very responsive and the power comes in immediately with the smallest of pedal depression. One feels like Ken Block it's so nippy. Once the novelty of this wears off, then option 4 is nice for normal driving but still with great reserves of power under foot.

The cost saving on my fuel bill alone covers approximately one third of the cost of the chip. Even without the improved economy, it would still be well worth it simply to have the fists full of power and overtaking is a breeze.

I must say i'm absolutely besotted with my purchase.
