Cruise control
Hi all
Recently we were driving from Van Rhynsdorp in 42/3 degree heat. My partner was driving, using the cruise control. She says that the car kicked out of cruise control, but, she accelerated and drove as per normal.
Stressed somewhat and did not use the cruise control until temperatures dropped below 35. All seems to be ok and car running fine, no smoke and starting first time.

Has anyone had these issues or does anyone have a theory re the cruise control. BTW, the cruise light remained lit.

Thanks.
Re: Cruise control
Bernard,
Is your Pajero manual?
If auto, was she driving in D or in "manual" mode?
The cruise will kick out if in manual on a steep hill where it can't maintain the set speed.

Re: Cruise control
Hi all

We had a simular problem we were driving to Stilfontein and we had a cutout on our way there, however we thought i might be dirty diesel. Driving back after the weekend the car was fine. a Week later we drove to Brits and had a cutout again driving with the cruise control on leaving us stranded next to highway. 5min later she started up again and we drove without the cruise control. Coming back from a week of vacation again she left us on the highway close to Rigel ave, few min later got her going, she was struggling to idle and sounded like a bad cough. We got off the highway again stuttering and cut the engine off left us standing next to the road. We were so blessed with people stopping to give their assistance, Thank you angel people. However after a wait my father in law and brother in law was there to help us. (we had no hazards or indicators and a caravan hooked). After worrying ourselves the macanic found a unichip that made this mess. So far looks like we are winning. So we were told not to use the cruise control while towing although the car has the power to do it, its best not to do so. We love our pajero but apperantly pajero's have a cruise control issue.

Re: Cruise control
The car has a faulty after market Uni Chip, now Pajero cruise control gets a bad rep.
Re: Cruise control
I had quite a tow load this holiday - used cruise control extensively - no issues.

Did keep eye on gearbox temp though - got as high as 90 deg at one point - but given outside temp was 45 figured was ok.

I am pretty sure your problem has nothing to do with the cruise control. The cruise control will disengage whenever any fault is registered by the ECU. This is a precautionary action.

Have your fault codes checked to assist in finding the actual problem.

On my Gen 3 the cruise control will kick out in both manual and auto modes as soon as the speed drops in the region of 15 to 20km/hr below the set speed. This can give one quite a "skrik"!

I never use the speed control when towing in a mountainous area for this reason as well as the fact that it will maintain speed on a downhill and then start accelerating halfway up the incline thus loosing speed and wasting fuel.

Running solo or only towing my little Karet, I use the speedcontrol everywhere though.

Re: Cruise control
This is a known problem that I have experienced many times on both 2000 Auto DiD and 2003 Auto DiD.
I do not know the cause so I take the point that any sensed fault may trigger the cruise control shutdown.
Circumstances for me have always been high speed (100-115k[h), up hill, with trailer (but can be an empty trailer). Always in Drive (not manual mode), typically at night, and always after at least one hour.
It is very dangerous. You lose speed dramatically and without brake lights warning following traffic. In the circumstances it takes some time to get back to speed.
I have driven the same freeway to my farm hundreds of times without incident.

I am a big fan of cruise control and use it at every opportunity, but in the circumstances I now ALWAYS have my foot on the accelerator pedal when going up a decent hill.

Re: Cruise control
Gents,

My speed control (2004 3.8 GLS) acts in the same way as LowRange's. When it happened the first time I thought something did go wrong. But, after many "kick-outs" at approx. 10 - 15 km below the set speed I have come to the conclusion that it is part and parcel of the Pajero speed control system - maybe to prevent the control from trying to maintain speed and "over boosting" the engine (I know my car does not have a turbo!!) with a fully open throttle valve and lots of unburned petrol. I have accepted it as normal although I do not like it.
