Strange Noise up front
Recently after driving about 60 km open road and entering town traffic the vehicle made a scraping sound while slowing down. This happened twice.

Immediate reaction was worn brake pads as it sounded like it. Stripped off wheels and did underside inspection – nothing wrong and pads still 50%.
Drive a number of times again – generally town type driving – nothing.

Last weekend took vehicle on a longer trip (about 300 km). On the way back and in traffic again, the noise returned – scraping sound. Stopped the car, put drive in neutral and back into drive – noise gone again.

Any advice you can offer would be welcome as I don’t know where to start looking other than assuming it is from the drive train.

Vehicle is a SWB 2006 3.2 DiD Pajero

Are you 100% sure it isnt just brake disks that got wet or something?

Re: Strange Noise up front
Hi Tick,
I had much the same experience.
Check the wiring below the brake fluid reservoir for any damage. Mine was shorting against a bracket producing a grinding noise.

Re: Strange Noise up front
Good Morning

I am watching this thread this interest. i had the exact same problem yesterday, after a 20 min drive in from the dam, slowing down toward a stop street, a load grinding noise started, very load, it stopped and after 5 mins it returned, i parked the car, after 30 Mins started the car, it has been fine since, no noise at all.

I thought perhaps a stone had got caught some where??

thanks

regards
Mark

Hello

just been told that the Brakes need sorting, nice and simple compared to the noise :)

Re: Strange Noise up front
Hi every-one, had and still have the same noise, it feels like something wants to engage while de-accelerate-ing and one normally has the foot on the brake and then you assume it to be worn brake pads but it is not. I tried all kinds off manoeuvers and then one day I changed to 4 wheel drive as the noise started and it stopped. I have been driving like that ever since. on further investigation I found out that there is a vacuum diaphragm that engage's the front differential and if its leaking it will cause that noise. Waiting for spares to replace said part and hope that is that. Will let you know how it went.

Charlie.
PS dam new at this posting, but hopefully we can solve this problem :) :)

Check the pins and bushes on the brake calipers.

Re: Strange Noise up front
Had a similar problem late last year with my Gen 2 - turned out to be the front diff solenoids were trying to engage / disengage. Putting the vehicle in 4WD, driving for a bit and then disengaging got rid of the noise.

Replaced the solenoids and some switches (R3,500 with labour) and the noise has gone for good - this after much on/off-road driving since.

Hope that helps

Quote .......... check the inner shaft bearing

Though not a heavily loaded bearing, the outer seal can deteriorate and the bearing collapse as did mine some years back. The outer seal is a Mitsu part, whist the bearing is a sealed 2007.

I could hear mine distinctly when rotating the front right wheel when off the ground, the bearing was totally collapsed.
