My auto cruise control has started playing up (Gen3 DID) It switches on when the vehicle is stationery but once I start moving, even though the instrument light remains on, it will not activate to set a speed. If I start out with it totally off, it will not turn on at all whilst I am moving. I initially thought that the switch was faulty but this is cancelled out by the fact that it always comes on when I am not moving. Does anyone have any ideas where next I should look before I make an expensive trip to the dealers ?
Thanks
Malcolm
Are all your brake lights working? I think the system is linked to the brakelight circuit to cancel it. Maybe there is a blown bulb or something that the system pick up as the circuit is not complete, due to the blown bulb, and hence not permitting it to engage at all?
Just thinking out the box here and throwing some stones at the problem, not sure if it is relevant at all?

Thanks for the advice. I checked them all now and they seem to be fine so probably not that. The problem started slowly - the cruise would only come on after a number of attempts at the switch - and progressively became worse. Now it is almost impossible to get it on although on a trip over the weekend I did manage to get it started and engaged control after pushing the button many times. However, once I stopped and with the ignition on, the switch works every time but once mobile, the cruise does not activate, even with the dash "cruise" light on. Is it possible for any wear to take place on the system as this would result in it gradually getting worse ?
Thanks

Maybe clock spring related then? Which might explain why it got gradually worse and not working once mobile.

Thank you for your response but please could you elaborate a bit on this as I am not at all familiar with the location or role of the clock spring your refer to. Is it something I can check or would I need to take it to an expert, or perhaps you can direct me to a source of further clarification ?
Thank you
Malcolm

The clock spring is basically the ring on which contact points move in the steering column. This enable switches on the steering wheel to work but still enable the steering to turn freely. Sometimes the contact points wear out and they don't work as they should. I am not 100% sure this is your problem but it might well be. Replacement is pretty common but I would think one need to know how to do this without upsetting the airbag system. I dont know of a place other than agents unfortunately.

For what it is worth I got a quote for replacement from the stealers at around R2600, that was last year. The clock spring was R1890 just for the part. I've left mine broken since I bought the Paj 4 years ago.....

Thank you both for your valued advice. I also did some research in the meantime and found an excellent description and method to access and replace the clock spring. (http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/member.php?u=1903)
So far I have managed to remove the panelling and accessed the ring. I sprayed some silicone spray into the contact area and will see if this has helped at all on my drive this morning. I am still baffled by the fact that the switch engages without problem once the ignition is turned on and also after the vehicle is started and is idling. It only seems to play up once it is mobile.
I am a bit reluctant to start fiddling in the air bag area, but might pluck up the courage and follow the above linked instructions carefully. I first need to source a new clock ring from the dealers though.
Thank you
