When I look at a vehicle I always check the VIN number to see if the seller is correct in his year model. The tenth digit in the VIN gives you the year model. Now when I was looking for a nice Gen4 all the 2009 models I looked at showed a VIN number indicating year model 08!!! This was of concern to me as I was not prepared to buy a vehicle and then find out I grossly overpaid for a vehicle that was actually a year younger. People sometimes buy a vehicle late in one year and register it in the next. There was about R50k difference between '08 and '09 SWB Gen4's. So I asked around at dealers etc and they all said that that was not unusual for Gen4's and not to worry. My license documentation also shows dealer sold the new vehicle in '09. I was however still puzzled why ???

Ok, so while researching this lot I came across some info.
It appears that overseas Gen3 were replaced by Gen4 but we only got new the new models about a year later than most overseas counties. This has been a common trend amongst SA manufacturers and the plus point is that hopefully all the gremlins are sorted out in the delay year. On Gen4 the '08 had an engine system pretty much the same as the Gen3. Common rail yes but normal type turbo. It appears (and any one is free to comment) that overseas '09 Gen4's went to one of those special turbo's with variable control in the exhaust turbine housing. It appears this is what the '10 140kw motor uses as well. The overseas '09's also have DPF's fitted and these 3.2 Didc's put out 129kw!!. My '09 does not have a DPF nor one of those variable type turbo's and I am happy about that 'cause I have found those inclined to be finicky (Marius will say because of the diesel!!! - hey Marius you hate the SA stuff!!! ). I do believe that quite possibly Mits SA decided to not go the route of the different turbo and especially not the DPF for '09 models and also keeping in mind that the new 140kw engine was coming in '10. So if I am right '09 models in SA must work according to '08 specs. Let's see what every one else has to say.

I have a 2013 Pajero (3 door) and previously had a 2003 Pajero 3 door. (Before that I had a 2001 and a 2000 model, all 3 door).

My 2013 Pajero is miles ahead of the 2003 model, a little better fuel consumption, but lots of more power. I bought it at 16000km and now has 42000, average fuel consumption is 8.96km/l, which includes nearly 4000km towing my Gypsey Regal caravan. I travel mostly in town and the car is stock standard. My best fuel consumption was 11.66 km/l. The last tankful worked out at 9.62km/l.

Checking my vin seem to indicate that it is indeed a 2009 built vehicle.

You of course have the nice uprated 3.2 engine fitted in that 2013 model. Me and Peter are trying to find out why the first gen4 2007-2009, seem to feel less responsive than than the gen3 preceding it, although engines are virtually the same except for the common rail fueling. This is a bit of a subjective seat of the pants.

Of course in South Africa all gen4 are auto. The 2007-2009 model is NS and 2010 on is NT is the uprated 140kw motor. The discussion quoted above was in relation to the different gearboxes fitted to the teo models and showing that on the Jatco box it was downtuned for some reason?

It might explain why I particularly feel cheated of a few horses, coming from a manual gen3, but more importantly also seem to indicate that one can get some more power from the motor at least up to manual spec. Is it save to do so on the auto box? Who knows? I have not seen a lot of gearbox issues mentioned on these models, not even on ones that has been chipped to get the extra power in Aus.

Oh well on the Vin number there goes part of my theory. Mine was obviously built in '08 and sold early in '09. I know the dealer put all the kit on as a demo and the previous owner bought it straight off the floor. I suppose we cannot expect them to work over Christmas now can we? But I do still believe we do not have the '09 model engine here with DPF. Has yours got a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)? It is after the CAT as far as I know and looks something like a 2nd CAT. The turbo also has an electric solenoid that controls the variable pitch of the turbo turbine housing veins on the overseas '09.

On the issue of the transmission, coming from an auto gen3 to an auto gen4 I was convinced there was a difference. The two autos just did not feel the same. My son said I was nuts! Aha one for the old man!

I agree I have never heard of any issues with the auto boxes. Now with regard to the actual make of transmission I am not unhappy (ie Jatco). My brother was keen on a 323i BMW. I had a very business contact at BMW and he once mentioned that the 323i had a Jatco box in it and said they were excellent but physically big (I found it very unusual that BMW would actually use a Jatco). Jatco's have been used in numerous Japanese models (except Toyota who struggled with their own) for years now. I have never heard of any issues with Jatco specifically either.

On the performance issue I am now starting to think I might have to accept the performance loss . I have taken pictures of my setup and will post.

HI,

I changed from a 2005 SWB DiD to a 2008 LWB DiDc.

I also noticed a definite drop in highway and towing performance.

I thought it was due to the extra weight going from SWB to LWB.

Also, I also assume my intake is seriously dirty... I'm surprised you mention that yours was pretty clean. The common rail DiD photos of dirty intakes that I have seen are scary...

Did you split open the entire intake? It is quite a job to clean - several hours.

Howzit Greg. I was about to set the valve clearances (which if serviced by a dealer I am pretty sure are neglected - because it is a job and a half to set them compared to a Gen3) What I did is I took the first section of the intake off to get at the fuel injector pipes, to be able to get the valve cover off. I then looked into the manifold with a camera (LUCKY TO HAVE THE GOODIES! ). I was not surprised it was pretty clean. This vehicle had been pampered by its previous owner. I checked and cleaned the MAP sensor connector on the manifold as well. I also blocked of the EGR and removed the CAT, plus made a place to fit the EGT (next project - we're going to Merry Pebbles in Easter and I want to see what it does).
