Have a 1999 Pajero Io 1.8 ,fuel consumption suddenly high after service at 170000km, replaced cambelt, checked tension pulled, checked waterpump, replaced all filters, oil & plugs
What can be done to improve consumption
Is your performance down as well? if so you might have skipped a tooth on the cambelt

not sure, only have car for 3 months now, seems pretty responsive
I seem to have a smooth idling noise from exhaust with a sudden dip & then back to normal every 4 to 5 seconds
Hissing / whistling noise from rear near silencer all the time ( Fuel pump?)
Stats show i should get 400 to 450 on a tank on urban cycle, I am 100 km off on a tank

Double check that the right spark plugs were used in the service. The 3l wants a resistor plug and if you dont put them in the engine does that hiccup thing and is also not as fuel efficient as it should be.
( 3l fuel efficient?
)
I am not sure what plug is specified for the IO so just check in the manual, if the ngk code has a R in it it is a resistor plug.

Cool, I will check that
I know the new plugs are NGK, not sure about the R type, will check
The plug wires are those with the coil on each plug wire individually
Plug gap sent to 0.8mm

I recently serviced my IO 1.6 and fitted NGK Type R plugs, so far so good. No problems and the idling is very stable.
You can check it yourself, if you want help let me know.
