2004 (Gen 3) 3.2 DID: 10PPM, 50PPM, 500PPM
Hi

I recently purchased my second diesel powered vehicle.
a 2004 3.2 A/T, kortgat after finally getting rid of my '2009 Tuna (Fortuner)

So, I'm absolutely new to Pajero's and reasonably new to Diesel engines....

Question: What grade of Diesel do these engines want/need/like?

From a bit of research on the forum, and a few other sites, it seems I need to feed it 500PPM.

From what I can see, there are some issues cropping up with 50PPM and 10PPM.
Second to this, I see people referring to 2-stroke oil being added when using 50PPm and 10PPM.

I would really appreciate some advice...

Thanks

Congrats on the purchase! 50 or 500 would be fine. The higher the sulpher content, the more frequent your oil changes. As for 2SO, from experience, the diesel knock is quieter. It adds a bit of lubrication and ensure burning is a bit cleaner, thus prolonging your injectors function - all in theory of course... ;)

My 2006 Pajero is doing just fine on 50 ppm WITHOUT the nonsense 2SO story.

Hi, im running on 50ppm only since I bought my 2009 3.2 in February this year, and have no problems, one question I would like to put out there is, apart from running on 50ppm, I am also using Castrol full synthetic 5w 30 engine oil, do I still have to change every 10 000km?
Re: 2004 (Gen 3) 3.2 DID: 10PPM, 50PPM, 500PPM
I used 50PPM since the oil fouls less.
Also look into removing the EGR and installing a EGT gauge. Also on 4x4 community there is a report done, IRC by Sasol, showing that 2SO does not have any advantage.

To put simply yes, stick to the specified drain interval.
To explain - A Synthetic engine oil of a specific additive level uses a synthetic base fluid to which the very necessary additives (detergent, dispersant, TBN booster, anti rust, etc, etc) are blended to give you a finished product.
A mineral engine oil of a specfic additive level uses a mineral base fluid to which the very necessary additives (detergent, dispersant, TBN booster, anti rust, etc, etc) are blended to give you a finished product. IE the difference is in the base fluid where as the "active ingredients" are the same there for they will do the same job of keeping the engine clean and the "nasties" in suspension until you drain. The big advantage of synthetics is when you have a stressed situation. ie a design or assembly "oversight" which places parts under abnormal stress. You will not find such with your vehicle.

Diesel engine oil degredation is caused by contamination of fuel soot (main culprit), fuel, metals, dust, etc) reduce these and only then can you consider extending drain periods and then it should be coupled with regular oil analysis.

Talking synthetic advantages, a certain manufacturer had a problem with running their engines for a first time, especially if they were immediately driven hard. The piston clearances were too small for the bores. The short term solution was to fill the brand new engines with a certain synthetic engine oil which avoided the pistons semi seizing while running in. Thereafter the engines ran happily on mineral engine oil.

Thanks, will do.

500ppm gives me slightly better feul consumption. Was the same on my hilux d4d

Good Evening i own a 99 3.5 DOHC i have a big problem. There's no spark on coil pack 3. I changed the Crank sensor, Crank Sensor Plate, Ignition Module, Coil Pack, ECU, Transponder, Transceiver, Barrel & Key. I Found the knock had a broken wire gonna replace it the weekend. Has anyone had such a problem before, Please help i'm at my wits end. Diagnostics not very helpful.

Is it possible that the knock sensor can cancel out a cylinder.
