50 ppm vs 500 ppm
Guys,
My SWB 2015 have been running on 50 ppm diesel since bought new in 2015. What will be the effect should I fill up with 500 ppm on the long term.
The service intervals are every 10 000km's thus presumably the diesel filter will be replaced.
Any other concerns I should take note of?
Regards,
Johan
Re: 50 ppm vs 500 ppm
Hi Johan,
This has been discussed in great detail. I'll try to summarise what the general opinion is.
1) 500ppm is not "dirty" so it doesn't impact at all on filter operation. The filter catches impurities that find its way into the diesel.
2) 50ppm has undergone additional treatment to remove more of the sulphur which naturally occurs in diesel. This process also removes the wax (oily stuff) in the diesel. Old fashioned (5000ppm+) diesel is actually an oil, but 50ppm not anymore. The fuel companies have to add a lubrication package to get lubrication back to an agreed level.

There is a school of thought that is of the opinion that this addition of lubrication isn't enough or can't be trusted... 2-stroke oil is then added. This issue is very controversial and heavily debated and argued.

3) The service intervals on 3.2DiD Pajeros used to be 5k. Then 500ppm became the norm and maintenance plans arrived on the scene. This resulted in 7.5k service intervals.
Commonrail injection and 50ppm diesel allow the these engines to go for 10k on the same oil.

4) If you run your car on 500ppm, then you contaminate the oil much faster ((with sulphur) and you shouldn't exceed 7.5k on a sump of oil.
