Hi Guys & Dolls

Have just replaced my 1997 Paj 4M40 motor with another.
Here is the puzzle: Starts and purrs like a kitten until the glowplugs switch off, then smokes and coughs and splutters something terrible.
Any bright ideas as to the cause?

Most diesels have what they call an "afterglow", I think it carries on supplying voltage to the glowplugs for a while but probably at a lower voltage until the engine warms up a bit. I know my Ford 2.5tdi had it I believe Pajero would have it too.

Have checked all relays and connections.....................all seem ok.

It turned out to be the Spill Timing

Now running smoothly.
