I have noticed that there is a gap between the lower control arm bush and the "bracket" it is fitted in. Is this a normal gap or should there be no movement there?
Looking at the closer photo it seems that there is times when the rubber does move against the front part of the bracket. Probably when either moving backwards or when in 4WD and moving forward.
Is it a sign that the bushes are worn?
What is an acceptable gap on the control arm?
I think they might be on their way out. Do they make a noise?

They do not make any noise, I just saw it and thought it might be wrong. It is strange, my car only have 100k km on now, is it normal for it to last for this time. If I look at the car in general, suspension and undercarriage, it does not seem as if the car have seen a lot of gravel roads.
How difficult (time and money) is it to change it?

Eddie, is that a jack I see in the one pic? Was your car jacked up and the suspension extended? That could explain the gap. The "standard" test for that bush is to force it forward and backward with a long bar. Too much movement will indicate worn bushes. I had mine replaced at 140k, by having new rubber bushes pressed into the control arms. To the best of my knowledge does Mitsu not sell bushes, but complete control arms.

Yes, I took the wheel off to check the brake pads when I saw the gap. I will have to see if it is different when it is on its own weight. Below is a picture of the rear end of the control arm at the same time. The gap on the rear end is closed which show the play then to be around 6-8mm.
Where did you replace your control arm bushes?

I live in Barberton and used an outfit in Nelspruit called N4 Suspension. My reason for visiting them was to get a noisy shock sorted out. The gent there took me through all the bushes on my car and carefully explained all his findings. They stock boxes full of different sizes and shapes of rubber bushes. They select the appropriate size, press it in, cut off the bits that get squashed out, and reassemble it all again. They couldn't get the handbrake to work again, but my indie in Barberton sorted that out chop-chop.
