Two stroke oil is only to be used in two strokes because of total loss lubrication,the oil is mixed with the fuel or on the later jap engines a small pump to feed the bearings,do not under any circumstances mix or add two stroke oil to any engine be it petrol or diesel,you are asking for trouble.

I have been doing it for close on twenty five years, and have never had an engine failure on any of the following engines:

• VW Passat 1.5 petrol
• Audi 2.2 5cyl petrol
• VW 1.9 petrol
• VW 2.1 petrol
• VW 2.5 petrol
• VW 1.6 petrol
• Chev 4.3 petrol
• Toyota 2.0 TD diesel
• Mitsu 3.2 Di-D
• MB 200 Kompressor petrol
• VW V10 TDi diesel

I feel that I have to contribute to this conversation. I bought my previous 3.0 V6 (1998model) Pajero when it had 130 000km on the clock in 2005. When it had 150 000km on I started using 150ml of 2 stroke oil per tank of LRP fuel. I have now traded it in at 230 000km without any damage or negative effects to the engine. I started doing this after a friend of mine who use to race V8 professionally, used 2 stroke oil in his engines not for the cleaning effect but mainly to hide the smell of jet fuel which they used illegally. These motors only lasted a few races and then had to be redone and he noticed that since putting in the 2 stroke oil the engine was much cleaner without any noticeable effect on performance.
I am now the proud owner of a 3.8 V6 Pajero, and allthough this one is on unleaded fuel I have from the first day continued with my habbit of adding 150ml of 2 stroke oil to a tank of fuel (+/- 50liter) and after 6000km no problems. I think this is a personal issue and what works for me may not be somebody else's cup of tea. So, if you dont like it dont do it, but allow each person to make his own decisions, whether it is right or wrong.

I get the impression, the 2-stroke oil story becomes more and more the habitus of a religious topic - you either believe in it or not....I still don't believe in it.

I had from 1990 to 2000 an Opel Omega station car in Germany, 2.0l petrol engine 115 HP. I sold the car in 2000 with more than 280.000 km on the clock because the body was so rusty that the car wouldn't have made it through the bi-annual technical check there. The guy who bought the vehicle took it only because of the engine, having still excellent compression data. He threw away all the body and just kept some interior as well.

The engine never saw any 2-stroke oil as this "philosophy" is not popular/know in Germany...

I fail to understand your point.

Nobody ever said 2-stroke in the fuel is the only way to make an engine last.

I don't think anybody is naive enough to think that is a "mend-all" with guaranteed long life, either.

It is neither a "philosophy", nor akin to a religion, but there is enough empirical proof to indicate that it does work.

I have no doubt that my 3.8V6 ran lighter on fuel, while I was adding the 2-stroke oil. Why would that be?
1)Less internal friction?
2)Better combustion of the petrol?
3)Better petrol delivery by the injectors (cleaner nozzles)?

How much carbon is likely to build up in an engine over three years and 50000km? I do plenty short trips. My office is 7km and the supermarket and friends within a 4km radius. No traffic to speak of, so of very short duration. I'll hit the road to Gauteng once every two months or so and Nelspruit will see me about once every fortnight.

Your use of the Pajero (short trips) is the worst kind of mileage you can put on a vehicle.
2-stroke oil will reduce the carbon build-up, associated with short trips.

I don't really know why it happens, but I support your statement about better consumption figures on petrol engines when using 2-stroke oil.
Who cares how it works, it works!

I have never researched or tried the two-stroke oil thing, so forgive my ignorance, but I have a question : What effect does adding the oil to petrol have on the octane rating of the mix? I would imagine that the octane rating would decrease, but perhaps in the ratio that the oil is mixed with the petrol the effect is very slight. If this is not the case, engines that are already slightly prone to pinking or knocking might ping or knock more with the two-stroke oil mixed in (especially now that the highest octane petrol available at the coast is only 95 and no longer 97 or 98 ).

I don't know about the effect on the octane.

What I know is that pre-ignition is often associated with carbon deposits (that glow).
2-stroke has a de-carbonising effect, which alleviates that problem.

I started off using RedX and/or ValveEase, until somebody told me that it is 2-stroke oil in a nice bottle, with matching price.
How true that is, I don't know either!
Since then I've used 2-stroke oil.

I'm no expert on oil or octane ratings.

My only thinking is that much larger amounts are used in 2-stroke motors that get a lot hotter than our 4-stroke motors and pose a bigger risk to pinging. Maybe the 2-stroke helps reduce pinging in the high temp 2-stroke motors.

Just thinking out loud. I might be wrong.

I'm just too aware of the undesirability of short trips on a petrol engine, but that is the hand that life dealt me. Having had three teenaged children in one house for a few years was just as undesirable as it was unavoidable
