I have a 2l oil cooler on my turbo plat kar and have not had any problems so far with nasty reaction with the synthetic edge. Just one point to remember the Edge has a high detergent quality and will remove any deposits in the engine so it is advisable to do the next oil change sooner than the recommended interval. Often folks do not take this in to account when changing to premium grade lubricants and if the oil filter blocks they blame the oil.

This way I can stick to the 7500 km oil service cycle and save a considerable amount on the cost of the oil. I have heard before that changing your oil filter regularly is more essential than changing the oil itself.

Henk what I should perhaps do then is an interim filter replacement plus oil top-up only.Edge has a high detergent quality and will remove any deposits in the engine so it is advisable to do the next oil change sooner than the recommended interval. Good idea
Maybe run for 3000 and do a filter change noting the colour of the oil. If it is very dirty it might be advisable to do the next change on 6000

What exactly does that mean ? Don't you change the filter when changing the oil ?Bigwill wrote:...I have heard before that changing your oil filter regularly is more essential than changing the oil itself.
Yes you do. Always change the filter and oil at the same time.Don't you change the filter when changing the oil ?
The point made is that if you only change the filter and not the oil you will end up with poor quality contaminated oil which will have a gradual negative effect on your engine.
However after a period of low mileage the oil may still be fine but may contain solids that could block your filter.
If you only change the oil and not the filter you may end up with a totally blocked-up filter which can have an immediate effect on your engine. When a filter blocks up it forces a bypass which means your engine gets unfiltered oil and the oil channels may block-up as well causing instant engine failure.
So not changing the filter is a higher risk than not changing the oil.
HOWEVER ALWAYS CHANGE BOTH TOGETHER.

Hi Guys,
I posted a similar thread on another site and roelfroux answered but this thread gets me wondering.
I drained the sump and replaced filter in my 3.2 did last night. I let it drain till it stopped dripping basically.
Replaced it all with new Shell helix H7 and i put 8 l in then ran to get it into the filter etc. Checked level and its over full.
ran it 7km to work, checked it agfain so motor had a chance to get oil through everything and still way over the dip stick full mark. Roelf says its a common problem with the did, but the motor is still almost 2 l short of stated capacity of 9.7 yet shows way over full already.
I did not blow air through motor etc to clear oil cooler though.
The oil is still clean after driving so no major contamination from 1.3l of dirty oil.
Before servicing, my oil level was low, below the min level on the stick and i got about 8-8.5 l out incl the filter so it does not seem there is a laod of oil hiding in the motor.
Why is this?
how full should full read ont he dipstick?
Regards
Adam

Firstly - Welcome to the forum. I am from East London as well - Beacon Bay
I wouldn't worry about the oil that was left in the cooler.
Safest way is to measure the drained oil and compare it to how much you filled. (That is if you didn't spill - I have a habit of spilling ......a lot......everytime

Thanks 4EP,
Also EL also BB. I will check exactly how much came out tonight when i get home and I know I put 8l in, but part of the concern is I am still 2 l short of the recomended quantity. What would have happened if I had put in recommened quantity as then it would be very overfilled.
Maybe the shell helix H7 is "bigger by volume" cos its synthetic! LOL. Thats why you pay more.

overfilling may cause the crank to touch the oil level causing foaming that can lead to air being sucked into the oil pickup.
It can also lead to excessive crankcase pressure that can cause leaks and block the PCV system. It can also affect the catalytic converter.
I presume you will find that the drained oil = the filled oil and the difference is the oil that stayed on the cams and in the oil cooler.

Adam, youre refrence:
is axactly what confused me too at the beginning. If you look at the handbook and add up all the different capacities, ie sump, oil filter and oil cooler then you get the 9.7 lkiters. However the book does not clearly state that one should add all three capacities to get the total volume required. I then phoned two different Mitsu workshops and asked them how much oil should the DID take. Both told me 8.5. So I then accepted that the cooler capacity is not additional to the rest but makes up part of the 8.2/8.5 liters. (*Seeing that the cooler sits above the oil filter I suspect now that it does drain out with the rest of the oil.) When I filled my car up it took exactly 8.2 liters to get to the second chip-out on the dipstick, which is where it should be. So yes I believe the handbook is confusing and I don't think that you or me should be further concerned seeing that we managed to get 8.2 liters in as the dealers woulde have done.the motor is still almost 2 l short of stated capacity of 9.7 yet shows way over full already.
