3.5V6 Smoke under hard acceleration
What would be the cause of smoke under hard acceleration?

I have never noticed my Paj smoking under normal circumstances, but this morning with the sun behind me I saw that, when I floored it to overtake a truck, there was a little smoke from the back.

It doesn't use any more oil than in the past.

If you drive 'carefully' and then accellerate hard, smoke is 'normal', due to residue in the combustion chamber and manifolds being dislodged.

It could be either worn rings, or worn valve stem seals.

To test the latter, do the quick check: run against compression on a downhill, then floor it. Worn valve stem seals will cause a nice cloud of smoke. :(

Compression test will show up the worn rings.

If it doesn't use excessive oil, and the performance is OK, don't look in the mirror!!

I do the valve stem seal check occasionally when I get a chance to drive in the hills. Nothing last time I saw.

There's no oil an the bodywork in the vicinity of the exhaust, and the immediate interior of the exhaust is grey (last time I washed the car a few weeks ago). So I assumed all was OK, which is why I got a bit of a fright. She did still take off like a scalded cat when I did put my foot down so there's nothing obviously wrong with performance.

This happened to me twice: Once after leaving the Kruger and accellerating beyond 60km/h for the first time in ±300km, and the other time after filling up at a consipcious gararge outside Worcester.

In both cases I thought I lost the engine - a massive white smoke screen bellowing from the exhaust! At the Kruger incident there was no loss of power or misfiring, so I decided to watch the temp's and oil levels but to push on. The problem mysteriously disappeared after ±5 km. I guess it was some build-up due to extensive sloooow driving in the Kruger. The second incident was scary, because she dropped power & misfired. I managed to get it to Orbit Boland, (Worcester) where the service agent checked it out and said it looked like a fuel problem. He suggested I drain the tank - which I just filled to the rim - some 95 litres! I drained most of it. After filling up again the problem was gone. The "dirty fuel guy" claimed there was nothing wrong with the fuel, but couldn't explain how it is tha my problem existes and disappeared.

Another cause of smoke may be valve stem seals. Otherwise it may be the sign of ring-wear. A compression test should indicate this.

Hope it is just dirty fuel!
