Hi all,
Been away for a week, and my 2800 Tdi wasn't started during that time. Started it up on Monday without issue. However, a short distance down the road, the engine spluttered and jerked and stalled while in gear and moving. While spluttering, huge amounts of smoke billowed out. It was greyish/blackish. I can't remember it being white. I understand this is significant on a diesel.

Anyway, parked at the side of the road, and tried cranking it. No deal. it tried to take, but failed. Eventually, the battery ran flat. A jump start resulted in lots of cranking, and eventually it took. I disconnected the jump leads, and the engine died. I jumped it again, this time warming it up properly while being jumped, and it issued clouds and clouds of grey dirty smoke (to pedestrians' ire).

Now a bit more background to this is that I had the agents service the vehicle about 3000km ago ($$$) and since it's gotten colder, cold starts are fine, coupled with a bit of jerking a minute later with a fair amount (ok, a lot) of smoke.

The service prior to that I performed myself, overfilling it by mistake, causing similar issues with lots of smoke and cold start issues. I dropped some oil out, and it sorted the issue. I've checked current oil levels, and levels appear about 1cm above max on the dip stick ie, agents overfilled it too.

Any ideas what might be the issue? Thanks in advance

It could possibly be the standard 4m40 diesel pump seals.

I have read the posts about the pump seals and it makes sence as I do have a diesel leak which I tried to fix, from the top of the pump below the throttle arm.
As I am unfortunately very curious, can someone explain to me what happens when these seals fail and why does it cause the simptons described.
Is it causing airlocks, overfueling...........??
I am going to do my seals the next week or so, where can I buy them, is there a part number????
