Glow plugs turn off prematurely
Good day to you all and thanks for taking the time to read my first posting.
I'm having some smoking problems after cold start up until the engine is hot on my 1998 4m40 Pajero. I hooked up a 12 v light to one of the glow plugs and verified that with a cold engine, the light goes out about 15 seconds after the engine fires up. I understand the glow plugs typically keep 'glowing' for about a minute and a half until the water temp starts to rise. This premature turning off causes a lot of dark grey smoke and heavy vibrations of the engine unless I rev it up. I have cleaned the contacts from the water temp sensor and the ones that go to the two relays, but not sure how to actually test the relays. (Glow plugs are new, aftermarket) Could I possibly hot wire the glow plugs to a switch inside to manually turn them on and off? Thanks for any suggestions. Dave
