Noise on DiD
Hi Pajero lovers, my 2000 3.2 DiD with 270 000 km on the clock (had her since new and one of the best vehicles I have had in my life) developed a noise in the engine this afternoon coming back from our Lodge in Dullstroom. I am towing a Suzuki Vitara to the lodge every 5 or so weeks. She is regularly serviced and still looks brand new after 10 years. Can it be a tappet or is it an injector? :?:
Re: Noise on DiD
  • don't drive it further!
  • it could be the timing chain guide (which costs less than R100, but can easily cause R100000 worth of damage) Do a search on 'chain guide'
  • get it to a workshop ASAP

Re: Noise on DiD
How would you describe the noise?

Also at what revs etc?
Re: Noise on DiD
Was the waterpump ever replaced in its life? At 270k it is a prime suspect I would say if it has not been replaced thus far. A failing waterpump usually gives a warning noise before it goes south. What type of noise are we talking here?

Re: Noise on DiD
Hi Guys, the noise is a clank-clank sound like a tappet or maybe an injector. The noise is audible from idling. I have booked her in at Brooklyn tomorrow, hope she makes it without further damage. No the waterpump has not been replaced, will have it done as well. I was thinking of maybe having the turbo redone, what do you think?

I'd say that could be the timing chain then, loose tensioner or guide, a water pump usually start leaking water and make a whining noise.

Maybe bearings on the big end? Valve clearance? Where does the sound seem to come from? Front, bottom rear of engine? I'd leave the turbo for now until you sorted out the current noise, unless traced to the turbo itself, which I doubt.

Please keep us updated.

Turbos don't go "clank-clank". They usually go in a big, spectacular way.
I would not touch the turbo unless 100% sure.
A stethoscope should isolate the origin of the noise.

Re: Noise on DiD
:( The verdict is out - a bearing/s!!! But she is in the good hands of my racing car engine builder Graham Nathan, I would not let anyone else touch a rebuild but Graham of Nathan Services at Kaylami (011 466 1017). The costs......will keep you posted
Re: Noise on DiD
The 4m4* bottom ends are very robust, so hearing about a failure is rare.
Is it a main (crankshaft) bearing or big-end connecting rod bearing?
I hope you plan to replace the oil pump, which could be the cause of the failed bearing.
What oil did you use in the engine?

Re: Noise on DiD
The cost to remanufacture a 3.2 DiD is out of this world! I was quoted R120k. The alternative was to buy a block at R52k, Cylinder Head at R18k and gasket set at R2.5k from Mitsibushi.
I have opted for a second hand engine from a GLX at 132000 km that rolled for R33k from Pajero Spares/Parthunt in Pretoria with a 3 months warranty. She will be back on the road next week.
