I doubt that you will be able to set up the timing accurately without the bottom cover.

I would in an emergency advance until it pings and then retard a marked point on the crank pulley (Harmonic Balancer) by 5mm which roughly translates to 2 degrees.

AFAIK you will have to undo the crank bolt to get that cover on/replaced - make sure you replace the crank bolt with the updated one

Don't play if you are unsure. Pinging can cause a headgasket to fail pretty quickly or damage the main bearings or gudgeon pins.

Thanks for that info. Didn't know about new bolts. Hopefully the agents will have them in stock.
