if there is a puff of smoke it may indicate a lack of compression or bad glow plugs (bad battery perhaps)

if there isn't a puff of smoke it means there was no diesel introduced on the unsuccessful starts - which points to the diesel feed solenoid valve or diesel pickup pump in tank (if it has one) - also electrical.
