Re: Burnt valve or not?
Spark timing!?

Plug wires are connected 1-2-3-4-5-6.
Internal bridges in distributoer cap sorts the firing order out.

Re: Burnt valve or not?
The saga of the engine is as follows (and probably my gripe):
1. Had the head checked a few weeks ago - 2 exhaust valves changed + 3 hydraulic lifters as this is what the engineering shop recommended. Asked about changing the other lifters and was assured the lifters were OK. Pressure test and all other tests apparently were OK too.
2. The problem of starting turned out to be the right bank (2 - 4 - 6) valves were not opening at all - replaced the lifters and voila! the engine fired up perfectly! Of course, the engineering shop quickly denied all responsibility of their workmanship in missing this out!
3. So now I have just done 60000km round trip and the motor overheated in the final 100km of the journey - started missing on one of the cylinders so I suspect a blown head gasket (again)! I suspect that, when taking it back to the engineering shop, they will discover that the head is slightly warped, and again will deny responsibility for the bad workmanship in not picking this up a few weeks ago!

I know this probably sounds like sour grapes, but I fail to see how an engine that is carefully driven on the open road at low revs and carefully monitored for overheating should suddenly develop blown head gasket symptoms for the second time in a few months - maybe coincidence, but I feel that the engineering shop missed a trick or two here on the original diagnosis - I will be pressing them for some outstanding results this time around, and probably an extended warranty over the standard 6 months / 10000kms.
