I had a situation where I also had strange noises that I thought came from the engine and suspected all sorts of things. It turned out that it was the steering pump. It was intermittent. The noise was bad when the car started and then would go away. The only way I discovered what it was was by using a long rod that I held against my ear and touched the various parts to detect the knock.
