Thanks Marius,
have done the self-diagnosis - ECL error 41 - points to Main throttle solenoid valve. Have booked for tomorrow to have it checked and fixed. There is local workshop that deals with diesel engines. I have to give it a try before driving over the mountain again.
I have a feeling that maybe the agent did not put all the wires back as it should have been.
Will keep you posted.

get familiar with how the throttle butterfly works on the 3.2 by going through my thread here
when it gives funny behaviour again - check what the throttle butterfly is doing. If it's closing then the engine will stall - no air = no running engine.

do not let them convince you of a new pump like so many dealers try to do.
Report to us what they say and then we can maybe help you sort it out without paying the dealers in lieu for a frosty

AND THE PAIN IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!
I found a workshop in Hermanus that specialises in Merc and mostly Diesel engines. Has one of the Bosch testers. My self diagnosis came with Throttle Valve solenoid error - and so did the tester.
It seems that during the time of the dealer replacing the speed sensor on the pump and the time of me taking over the car, one of the vacuum pipes to the throttle valve solenoid must have decided to become damaged. I wonder how this happened???
It is an absolute joke to be told that the fuel pump needs an overhaul. This is what I call mega ripp-off.
I am still thinking about writing a complaint to the dealer, but have a very strong feeling that it is a waste of time.
Before the problems started I was thinking very hard about upgrading to a newer model Pajero, but now I am not sure anymore. There is no better car for me, but the service given by some dealers is just so shocking, that I am not sure if I ever would want to deal with that again.
The main thing is that my Paj is happy again, no funny lights and no problems.
Thank you all again for your input, most appreciated.

was it that butterfly as I mentioned in my previous post?

Hi Marius,
they broke one of the vacuum pipes going to the solenoid.
According to the mec it was the stage 1 throttle control (?) - this is why the ECL came on when idling. Once the ECL was on the car was behaving quite normal, before this the revs at idling were between 900 and 1000, so a bit higher than normal.
Thanks again for the help, the forum rocks!!!!!!!

yes. that's the idle butterfly system. It close the intake butterfly about 90% at idle when car is up to operating temp. It supposedly makes the engine idle quieter and smoother. I have bypassed it and hear no difference.
If the vacuum pipe to it is disconnected/broken it does throw a CEL at idle/coasting.
