It is usually not the stepper motor. I opened mine when I stripped the TB and it looked new.
The usual diagnosis is dirt in those slots just before the butterfly on the throttle body that gets clogged.

Yeah will have a look at the TB - possibly this weekend. Looks like a reasonably straightforward job. Are there any gotchas I need to be aware of?

stepper motor is probably fine.
My bet is that it's the throttle body that needs a clean.

The symptoms seem to indicate an inlet manifold air leak causing the engine to run too lean..I suggest you check all gaskets and vacuum lines - whether fitted, fitted correctly and whether in good condition.

Well it seems the idle control valve is toast... Mech said it was extremely dirty but no go when cleaned that or the throttle body...

Wonder if Martin @ Parthunt can source a used one for me.
Also, my starter motor has been overhauled, but the ring gear will need replacing at some stage.
