Re: Richtersveld. 2012/04
Great report - Thanks for sharing!

Had to postpone our trip to next year - hope we can go then

(*Note to self (and Simon) :) - next time let one of the kids pose in The Hand - just to show how great it is!)

Wow!
Looks like a "worm hole" from a sci-fi movie!

I am still trying to get my head around the pic.

Is the "vanishing point" then true north?
Is the length of each star's track an indication of its distance from the camera?

Not sure about the heading but my math tells me the length of the trail should be directly proportional to the distance from the center point as the change of angle from the center point will be constant for all the pie pieces of the circle.

A slow moving satellite would have made an interesting squibble on the pic..... or a passing planet like venus might have made a nice bendy line on it.

Gerhard, the pic is taken facing South - some of the brighter trails are of the Southern Cross.

The length of the startrail is proportional to it's "distance" from the celestial pole.

Marius, I hear you but that kind of thing is hit and miss, and because of the near full moon they wont be bright enough to register. There's a brief description of the image here

So, the "vanishing point" is along an extension of the rotating axis of the earth, looking south?

PS
I think you need to have the camber on Pumba checked!
:D :D

Yup. That's known as the celestial pole. And no my camber is not off. Sadly the vagaries of an ultra wide angle lens caused that.

I hope so

Still, with an awesome pic like that, who cares about the camber
