(Uni-Q Chip)

Hi all,
OK you have now got me totally interested, and it seems there some knowledgeable people taking part in this discussion. I have some questions you might answer.
I had a 2.8 pajero which I put on a dyno set its timing to max performance, adjusted to fuel delivery to a max EGT of 750 degrees measured at in the exhaust manifold close to the exhaust valve. I had some increase in power and better fuel consumption, but more important for me was that the engine was running at its optimal performance which will increase engine life.
Now for my 3.2 DID 2003
1. During mass production, and manufacturing tolerances all engines do not deliver exactly the same power. Are the “maps” not done to tolerances that will allow all engines to perform “ok”, but by redoing the maps (with a piggy back chip) the parameters can be set to the optimal for that specific engine?
2. I don’t want to cause myself unnecessary engine repair costs, by fitting a chip and later having holes in pistons. So to get my 280 000 km engine running to its optimal;
a. How is “tuning” done, can the injector pump timing be set? How?
b. Can the fuel delivery be adjusted? How?
3. Which reputable shop can you recommend?
Andre.

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
I have had a Dastek Chip in my 2.7i Hilux for 10 years and no problems. My fuel pressure was too low so the chip was programmed to over-fuel and did not improve performance but fuel consumption was high. Took it to Arnold Venter of CRD and they fitted more powerful pumps and killed the donkey I had. Now have thoroughbred performance.
Took my Gen 2 1998 3.5 litre automatic to Dastek to see if they could help improve fuel consumption sitting at 22/26 l/100kms. They tested and said engine was running at optimum without it and unnecessary. But somebody there suggested I make use of the Tiptronic manual over-ride to keep revs lower. Fuel consumption improved to 14 l/100km by changing up at 2300 rpm and down at 2000 rpm.

Hi all,
I had the same hesitation issue on my Gen 4, It was chipped when I bought it.Removed the chip, it went away. Power was good but it wasn't in long enough to feel or test anything. I say take out the bastard thing.

I decided that with the next fill up I'll remove the chip and see what happens to my fuel consumption over the next tank or two. Hopefully in that thank or two I'll get used to the little less power that it won't bother me later.

I can always keep the chip for that day when I need the extra power or when heavy loaded or towing and I might need the extra power, but I doubt if I'll put it back once removed.

There might be a dastek for sale soon.. :D

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
Hi all. I own an 07 3,2 with a Kaufner chip and have not
experienced a pronounced hesitation which was commented on.
Fuel consumption has improved by 1,38L per 100km during highway driving and 0.9L in the urban cycle. Definite torque improvement
combined with good throttle response makes it a pleasure to drive... :D

Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
I have a 2009 SWB 3.2 Di-D with 155 000 on the clock. I had a Dastek Chip installed by SAC in Vanderbijlpark approximately 70 000km back. Power and Torque is fantastic and fuel consumption dropped between 1 and 1.5 liter per 100 km. Absolutely no problem. I also had the same installed on a VW Sharan 2.0TDi at 40 000 km, years back to try and kill the dead spot from the turbo lag. Very little success with that but the fuel consumption dropped drastically and again the Power and Torque is amazing. My friend took it over from me and at 243 000km now on the clock, he is still as happy with it as I was the first day. The important issue I believe is, who is doing the installation. Make sure you have it done by a reliable fitment center. Frans
Re: Kom ons gessels "Dastek Unichip"
Hi gents, I have two thoughts about the issue: 1. Reading the posts it confirms an issue a friend of mine had; to make a long story short he took his vehicle in for remapping of the chip at a respected vendor in Boksburg but they were unsuccessful apparently because of low fuel pressure delivered by the pump. They wanted to replace it at great cost. Conclusion; the fuel delivery pressure is important. Any comments on this?
2. When I look at modern vehicles, some hi performers have a small red button that turns the machine into a monster. So clearly there is a map for economy and one for performance. When a chip is installed the mapping must then be done to favor one of these two settings. Over fueling is not necessarily a requirement but can be done to override factory safeguards that attempts to ensure engine life and reliability. IMHO a lot can be done to ensure good performance but the techy needs to know his stuff.
