When we replaced the front shocks we looked for play everywhere on the front suspension and did not find anything. The stabiliser links were replaced at the same time.
So I am not sure where the fault might be, but at this stage I am willing to try anything.

I dont know your vehicle but the following suggestions:
Check all mountings, engine, gearbox, stearing rack, suspension, radiater mounting, intercooler, front diff etc.
Check for other components which might be loose, battery, water bottle, exchaust etc.
Check for play in wheel bearings, drive shafts etc.
Check mounting of gerabox to engine and if seperate transfer then the mounting between transfer and as well.
Check if your shocks are not touching something, I had this on my Astra after a pothole, plastic cover around shock got damaged and caught on part of the suspension when going over bumps etc.
Check top mounting rubber of shock assembly as well as top bolts of shock-to-body mounting.

maybe you are mishearing where it comes from.
The crossmember bushings that support the gearbox are also prone to failure after a while. Check them. There are 4 of them.

Many moons ago, TranskeiCowboy had a similar problem on his GLX.
It turned out to be the front shocks being fitted with the incorrect diameter bolts.
This created a minute gap between shock and bolt.
Worth checking?

Thanks will check it out.
The knocking sound on my vehicle is not hard at all, you cannot hear it when the windows are closed, I can only hear it while driving slow with the window open.
I will report back if I make any progress.

general driving on our roads, our rodas are bumpy though in zim, it isnt continuos. I have a feeling its soemthing to do witht he shocks, which i hope to replace when i find out which are the best suited.

Hi tsdoran, I just bought a Gen 3 with 145k on the clock and when I got to the farm I had the same noise. Right front wheel "knocked" if I went over a bump that hit the left wheel first. I thought it was the shocks but I've had her serviced and they found that the engine mountings were worn. With them replaced she's as smooth as silk.

I have been told to replace the rubber "seats" at the top shock absorber housing.
Apparently they compress a bit and harden after a time.
I'm going to have them replaced and report back here.

Hi guys,
Tighten all your suspension bolts. I have a 1999 SWB and had the same problem, went to Mitsubishi and they just tightened all the bolts and the noise was gone.

Check your disc pad anti rattle clips. If these are weak or broken it sounds like a loose suspension part, especially with the windows open. If the noise goes away under braking, then this is your problem.
