Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
Your problem is not same as mine, my problem is uncontrolled acceleration and loss of throttle control whereas yours is cutting out of the engine. If you have changed all the filters and cleaned your fuel lines the problem could be related to inadequate fuel pressure supply to the injector pump. Not surprised that agents could not find anything wrong. They say that since my ECU does not communicate with the MUT-II meter they cannot diagnose the problem and may have to replace all the related electronics & sensors. My problem still not solved so i have decided to replace the accelerator sensor unit first. If that does not work i will proceed with replacement of the ECU. Will let you know how my problem is eventually resolved.

Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
Hi there. I have a 2000 Pajero 3.2 DID 5 door with 175 000 Km on the clock. My car has similar symptoms. Firstly let me get to the good points
1) The Engine doesn’t smoke,
2) Not using oil
3) Coolant level are normal, and don’t use any coolant
4) Pulling very strong
5) Fuel consumption over n 7500km towing trip was 8.4km/litre
6) And starts first time every time in any conditions.
My family and I was using our Pajero on a 7500km tour across Europe during August/Sep 2010 towing a caravan weighing loaded around 1.1 tone, starting in the United Kingdom. The vehicle will go for hundreds of miles not showing any signs of what is to come. I will give a very good description of the symptoms as I am sorry to say I had to go through this at least 50 times!!! innigoceating steep mountain passes, loads of tunnels and bridges with hardly a space to pull off. Visiting Mitsubishi in France, Spain, Barcelona Girona and Italy with no solution.

I Have discover that the problem is temperature related and that it only happens when the outside temp are above 24 deg C, in my case it usually happens when the motor are under load, (up hill while towing)
1) The rev counter will start fluctuating slightly up and down although the motor are still running at say 2000rpm
2) After a few seconds the rev counter will drop instantly to 0 and the engine will start to accelerate, (and sometimes cutting out)
3) Now a smokeless pajero has changed into a big ball of smoke
4) I will usually pull the transmition into N to try and bring the whole lot to safe standstill; in the meanwhile the engine is still doing her own thing by revving up and down. (Or had already cut out)
5) By now you are over whelmed with exhaust smoke.
6) The motor will finally came to a stall by switching the ignition off.
7) 5-10 min later you can instantly start her up, no sign of smoke, or any problems what so ever,,,,and off you go, till you hit the next long hill, watch out!!!
8) I also experiencing what Mike had experience that when you stop at a toll, or something similar, the motor idle unevenly like on 3 cylinders, and when you pull away she is running fine. ”but this was usually an indication that she will do this thing again if I am going to encounter a steep hill in the next couple of kilometres”.
9) The engine temp never showed a reading higher then half on the gage.

On the trip we attempt the following procedures
Without any success;
1) Replacing the air and fuel filter in France
2) Replacing the EGR valve in Spain
3) Flushed the hole fuel system with 2 bottles injector cleaner in Spain
4) Checked the Injectors in Barcelona
5) Mitshubishi wanted to open the head in Girona Spain, (I refused)
6) Flushed the whole cooling system with new coolant, and clean out the reservoir bottle. In Venice “The coolant I replaced was very clean”
7) I removed the thermostat on a mountain pass in Austria trying to cross the Alps.
8) I also bridged the electric fan so it was running continuously, and replaced the radiator cup with a new one,
9) Both the feeding and receiving radiator pipes where hot, indicating good circulation.
10) Even after she had cut out on a steep mountain pass, with outside temps up to 37 deg C the radiator will only loose about half a cup of coolant if you remove the radiator cup, indicating that the engine aren’t boiling and overheated.
11) There are no diagnostic faults that are showing up.

The removal of the thermostat and the running of the fan definitely improved the situation by at leased 70%
I had the most problems when the outside temperature starts to go over 30deg C, How warmer it gets how more frequently it happens. The switching off of the aircon didn’t make a noticeable difference.

Back over the English Channel in cold Britain, We had done a 600 km round trip in temp under 20 deg C. with the caravan, and not even a single miss fire!!
I am sure Mitsubishi must have encountered this problem before and solved it as they are still using the sane engine on the latest models and there are thousands of them running in desserts across the world.
I really hope that someone out there can direct us to the problem so we can keep the legendary Pajeros name high and celebrate the victory!

Greetings From a jape returning to SA
MIKE
Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
HI DUAN
My problem was eventually sorted out. The problem was a sensor on ( I think the fuel pump) Had to wait 6 weeks while stock ordered from Japan. Not had a problem in +- 20 000 km since
Hope you come right and welcome back
Regards
MIKE

Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
Hi Mike
I always believed that it can’t be a big problem, is it possible that you can get me more info on the part that you had to replace? I am sure that loads of other owner’s world wide will appreciate this info, as it is a topic on other countries forums also

Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
Hi guys,
I'm new here so i will attempt to let you know my issue. I seam to have exactly the same issue as Duan. All you good and problem points I check. I have a 2000 3.2 did imported direct from Japan as a full import (to Zim) it had 85000km on the clock and at about 140 000km it started with the same simptoms. I have had the fuel pick up in the tank checked, fuel and air filters changed etc.

Unfortunately our service agents up in zim are not comprehensively equipped. I called an agent in SA to book in the Paj for a full checking over etc. They don't touch imports, and after a little hissy fit from me they were a little more helpful. (My Paj was fully legally imported and they are the agents etc...)

Anyway they recommended an agent for injectors fuel pumps that they use. I went there and they hooked up the paj to the computer and the below "faults" came up. (appearing as it was given to me)

Control unit diagnosis MITSUBISHI Diesel EDC VRZ 1.0 error memory
43 injector timing solenoid valve
no control
51 Exhaust recirc. position sensor
open circuit /short circuit
52 Boost pressure control valve
Faulty
31 CAN communication
Faulty
No. of errors 4

Ok there are a couple more faults.

My 4x4 does not ingage. I try and the orange flashing light comes on and stays in 2 wheel mode.
Since i have had it it has engaged earlier on but not consistently. Now it does not seam to at all.

I have the approx 7" full screen center "multi communication center" that among other things has the factory rear reverse camera and supposedly a nav system etc (For japan!) but has never worked. I have taken it to auto electritions that have had no success and if anything probably done more harm than good! the SRS light is now on constantly after they had a go.

One garage sent the car to a computer diagnosis "specialist" and came with a list of faults and "deleted' some of them. one being cruise control which worked fine and now does not work at all!!

Duan I did not realize mine was ambient temp sensitive until i read yours and although warm here it does seam to drive better at night and in drizzle.

It was doing exactly the same with the rev counter and accelerator. recently it has changed a little that it seams the engine light comes on and it goes into "limp" mode.

Wifey and I love this car and are desperate to get to the bottom of this! and it is getting worse / more frequent.

Any advise or comment would be gratefully appreciated!!
Duan did you get to the bottom of your issue?

Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
Hi Mickster
My vehicle is also a Jap import model.
It look like the problem is not a major problem, It is caused by the NE signal valve or also called the speed sensor on the diesel pump.
there are two sensors on the pump. I found this on the Australian web. It was 130 Aus dollar each imported from Japan.
It was apparently about a hours work to replace them.
Please don't spend more money on your car, it is a great vehicle and there is nothing wrong with the engine, ECU, or diesel pump. It is only a sensor that send the wrong impulse through to the ECU.
I will keep you posted.

Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
@ mimmo

im in the uk and have the same problem as yourself, sudden accelaration no control of the throttle it happens maybe twice in a day then maybe not for a month

mitsubishi dealer cannot conect to ecu and say replace ecu but they dont garrantee that will resolve the issue

the car is fuatless apart from it decides to accelarate itself the only way to stop it is to engage neutral and switch off then restart

the car is a 3.2 did 2001

keep me posted how you get on as i will probally go down the same route
Re: 2001 3.2 DID ECU Problem
My Di-D did it once only.

Marius immediately took out the can of WD40 and sprayed the fuel pedal whereever he could reach (it is drive by wire, so I suppose it is a fancy reostat or similar, but there are moving parts).

It has never done it since.

Worth a try, I would say.
