Since I changed to DELO 400 about 2 years ago, my car at worst would "tick" for 5 seconds, then it is gone for the day.
The Delo 400 has a detergent in it that clears the small openings, allowing oil to flow freely into the lifters. Even my dipstick has changed colour from the dark colour of dirty oil residue to sprinkling silver!
Do a search on the website for this topic - Marius Fourie (4ePikanini) gave some great tips.

Hi Guys
Stay so far away from the Castrol oil products, that you don't even touch the container in the shop!
The Delo 400 and Delo Ultra Gold 15w40 is the way to go - a little more expensive, but then your Pajero is worth it in the long run! Dont forget the oil filter when you do the oil change - always use the best filter you can find - the GUD range are just fine, but dont settle for the nameless brands of 'chinese imports'! Also dont overlook the air filter - it is just as important as the oil filter,(husband and wife) and again, dont settle for a fake - purchase a genuine GUD!

Hi,
Can someone please just clarify if the overfill by 5mm is on a cold or hot engine? I have ticking lifters with Delo 400.
They we're quiet for about 14days (I was very happy that the forum advice worked) after the service, but they are back. They tick from cold till the engine is about 50% onto it's operating temperature.
The exhaust also smokes a bit while the lifters make their ticking sound. Who else has smoke and noisy lifters? The smoke clears completely as soon as I have driven a km or two, by which time there is also no more ticking. Is smoke a symptom of lifters or valve stem seals?
Also on oil volume: The manual says 6 Litres, but the worshop gave me a 5L can back with a balance of about 200mL in for me to overfill with myself. They did not want to do the overfill bit. Did they really underfill the oil?

I fill mine to about 3-4mm ABOVE the full mark.
My mechanic says that it is impossible that it makes a difference, because the oil is pumped from the bottom of the sump, and he refuses to overfill it (goes against all logic from his training - therefore I cannot blame him), but the moment my engine starts ticking too long, I can check the oil level has dropped to FULL (or lower).
Sometimes when I hear the ticking too long, I switch the engine off and on (while stationary!) and the tick is gone on restart.
Remember, the oil can only clean, it cannot repair.
Marius Fourie has placed a post on lifter replacement - do look it up on the forum, it is really very informative.

Hi all
Just some confirmation as to why you should be using Delo 400 in your engines - this from Chevron recently:
"Chevron Lubricants in SA recently completed its first engine teardown to showcase how Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W40 protects engine parts. This proof of performance tear down was undertaken on a Quality Oils Transport Truck whose engine has completed 1,000,000+ kilometers using Caltex Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40.
This is a great milestone for us in SA to be able to develop our own proof of performance for vehicles operating in SA conditions as this helps to further drive the Delo superior performance messaging locally. A team of Chevron personnel along with local Original Equipment (OE) dealer maintenance personnel tore down a Cummins ISX 500 engine for Quality Oils Transport that hauls oil products between Bloemfontein and East London over many miles of changing conditions and elevation grades to see if Delo 400 Multigrade was able to provide critical engine parts protection.
After 1M+ km, the key parts including the main bearings, connecting rod bearings, pistons, and piston liners showed limited wear and minimal deposits. The engine itself was very clean with no sludge or deposit buildup on critical parts or the engine deck. The OE dealer mechanics onsite were impressed and commented that they have never seen an engine with over 1M+ kilometers that looked in such good condition and had parts with limited wear or deposits."

It's so easy to "We knew it", but it is good for non-converts to read this.
There is enough evidence to state that Caltex / Chevron Delo400 is the best 15W40 engine oil available anywhere.
My motto is simple:
"Why argue about oil(s) which has positive and negative reports? (a few popular names come to mind).
I have yet to see any negative reports on Delo400, where it was used in the correct application"

MMC,
This is my personal opinion on your questions:
1)Oil level can be checked on a cold or hot engine, as long as you allow enough time for the oil to settle back into the sump after a drive. The worst time to check is after a cold start. The cold oil will be real sluggish to settle back into the sump.
2)Ticking after a 14 day peace period could be that the DELO has done its cleaning-up to the limit of its capacity. If it was my car, I would ask my wife for another R300 and do another oil and filter change. It can do no harm, only good and will only set you back R300.
3)Are you sure it's smoke and not fuel vapour.

I have a 1998 3000 V6 SWB with 250000kms on the clock. My ticking noise would come and go and sometimes not go away at all (from cold to warm engine start). I replaced Delo Engine Oil and oil filter three times in the last three six months and the noise persisted. Last week i had my mechanic replace the Hydraulic Lifters (3mm holes) and just returned from a trip this weekend. My engine has never been more quiet since the repair. It seems this has solved my problem but i only have to wait and see
