Apologies for the late replies - I've been taking a break from the Internet.

The gasket was damaged when the engine overheated due to one of the T-pieces bursting.

First of all, took the car back to Mitspro, and we are convinced its not the water pump, since the pitch doesn't change with the engine speed. There seems to be a small air leak somewhere, where air is being sucked into the engine, causing the high pitched whine. Nothing very serious though.

I did +- 4000km since we checked it, and it hasn't gotten worse. I will have it looked at now that I'm back from holiday.

@bep0301: The reason my car struggled to start was due to water being sucked into the cylinders through the hole in the head gasket. The behaviour was exactly the same as yours.
